🚨🚨New paper alert 🚨 🚨 Great to see our new paper in Nature Communications get published today! "Acute particulate matter exposure diminishes executive cognitive functioning after four hours regardless of inhalation pathway" authored in collaboration with Thomas Faherty, Gordon McFiggans and Jane Raymond. We find that quick exposures to high concentrations of #AirPollution affect the selective attention of participants. This can affect an individual’s ability to concentrate on tasks and avoid distractions. I believe the implications of the paper are quite profound. Nature Water Talks: Interfacial Solar evaporation Our next even in the Nature Water Talks will be on 26th February at 2 PM GMT My colleague Shujuan Zhang will be moderating a panel discussion with Jia Zhu, Baoxia Mi and Swee Ching Tan. They'll discuss how technologies based on interfacial solar evaporation can help in the provision of clean water. All three authors have contributed to a focus issue on the topic that will be published in our February issue. An incredible morning here in Tokyo today! Together with Sony we - the Nature Portfolio - celebrated the winners and the runners up of the SONY award for women in technology with Nature. It is a new award program, launched in March 2024 by Sony Group Corporation in partnership with Nature, that recognizes three outstanding early to mid-career researchers from the field of technology with a prize of $250,000 USD each to support their research and accelerate achievements that will drive positive impact in the world. As a co-chair of the judging panel (together with Dame Stephanie Shirley, IT entrepreneur turned philanthropist) it was an honour for me to help select this year's outstanding winners. The caliber of applicants was incredible and the contributions of many of the early stage researchers were as high as those in the mid-career stages, making our job especially difficult. The mid-career award winners were Kiana Aran, a professor of bioengineering and medicine at UC San Diego, and Amanda Randles, a computational scientist and biomedical engineer at Duke University. Yating Wan, Assistant Professor at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology,  won in the early career category. Jiawen Li from University of Adelaide, Australia received judges commendation. The work of these four outstanding researchers and engineers ranges from bioengineering, nanoscale 3D printing with optical fiber technology, to silicon photonics, to digital twin technology as applied to healthcare. And yet their work has a great deal in common - it is intrinsically multidisciplinary and collaborative, and recognises the importance of diverse groups coming together. This year's winners perfectly showcase the kind of contributions that Sony and Nature were looking to recognise.
