NCRM delivers a comprehensive programme of research methods training across the UK
About us
The National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM) provides cutting-edge research methods training and capacity building across the UK. The centre runs a diverse programme of courses, workshops and events throughout the year, covering a vast array of topics in a variety of interactive formats. In addition to our training, we produce learning materials, host an extensive library of online resources, conduct research and support innovation in research methods. Through these activities, NCRM aims to advance methodological practice in the social sciences and beyond, across all disciplines and sectors. Our training and resources are designed for both academic and non-academic researchers, and cover core, intermediate and advanced methods. Partners and funding NCRM is a partnership between two universities with international reputations in methodological research and training in the social sciences: the University of Southampton and The University of Manchester. This core team is complemented by a network of partners from across the UK, which deliver and advise on training, and provide subject expertise diversity. NCRM was established in 2004 and has been funded by the Economic and Social Research Council through a number of phases. The current five-year funding phase runs between January 2020 and December 2025 and focuses on training and capacity building.

NCRM has published a new online tutorial on how to use generalised additive models – sometimes seen as a middle ground between linear models and machine learning. Generalised additive models (GAMs) are a flexible class of statistical models that aim to explain the relationship between an outcome of interest and one or more covariates. GAMs differ from traditional regression models (also known as generalised linear models) as they allow users to include nonlinear relationships between the outcome and covariate(s). They can cope with complex relationships that are beyond simpler linear models, but uphold the interpretability that is often lost when using machine learning approaches. A free NCRM tutorial explains how to use sequence analysis to identify patterns in people’s longitudinal trajectories. The online tutorial guides researchers through four steps: creating sequences, comparing sequences, cluster analysis and interpreting clusters. The TraMineR package in R is used to conduct sequence analysis, with the underlying concepts also generally applicable to other computer software, such as Stata. The tutorial features four videos, diagrams, simple explanations of the key concepts, a worksheet and downloadable code. A new one-day course will provide an introduction to the Education Outcomes Linkage (EOL) database. The course takes place online on Wednesday, 26 March 2025. It will include a mixture of lectures and interactive discussions with experts. EOL is a longitudinal relational database comprised of a range of tables containing post primary schools’ data for pupils aged 14 and over in Northern Ireland. No specialist prior knowledge of the EOL or statistical software is needed to attend. However, a basic knowledge of research design and quantitative data analysis would be beneficial. The course is being delivered by NCRM, NISRA and ADR UK (Administrative Data Research UK). NCRM has published a free online tutorial on how to conduct focus groups. The tutorial features a video, worksheet, list of key terms and simple explanations of the key concepts. As a qualitative method, focus groups are used to obtain a range of views or opinions in social research from social actors, including citizens, community members and groups, customers, policymakers, politicians, business leaders and experts. Participants are selected based on their knowledge or experience of the topic to be explored. The interactions which participants have during a focus group are crucial for providing insights into their different perspectives.
