Ki te taumata, Aotearoa ki Ingarangi, Celebrating New Zealand in England since 1927 Serving the New Zealand community.

About us

Founded in 1927, the New Zealand Society UK is a non-profit, voluntary society that aims to connect and support New Zealanders in the United Kingdom (and those in the UK who have an interest in New Zealand) through social gatherings, events and financial support for Kiwi businesses and cultural groups. On 25th April 1925 a meeting was convened to revive the New Zealand Annual Dinner, which it was understood, had been held on eighteen occasions before the First World War. There is documentary evidence of a Dinner in 1898 (the archives include a dinner plan) and of another in 1901, of which we have a photograph. The initial aims of the Society were to celebrate what it meant to be a New Zealander in England, and to promote trade between the two countries. These days that means that we host a varied calendar of events each year in recognition of important dates for our NZ community within the UK. For example, in February we hold the annual black tie Waitangi Day Charity Ball and a commemorative Waitangi Day church service at St Lawrence Jewry, with a reception hosted by the Worshipful Company of Girdlers afterwards. At the Waitangi Day Charity Ball we award one person as the UK New Zealander of the Year, for recognition of outstanding contributions towards promoting the interests of New Zealand or New Zealanders in the UK. At most of our events throughout the year we run we fundraise for the NZ Society UK Charitable Fund, from which we then award grants to individuals and organisations who seek to strengthen, broaden and deepen the communities and relationships between New Zealand and the United Kingdom. • You may have seen her work in 'Wellington Paranormal' as a writer for all four seasons of the smash-hit comedy series. One of her episodes took out 'Best Comedy Script' in the New Zealand Television Awards. Or you've seen her on TikTok, where her videos impersonating Jacinda Ardern went global, appearing on the BBC. But stand-up comedy is where Melanie shines. She has won the Billy T Award and Best Newcomer Award in the New Zealand Comedy Festival, Directors Choice in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and was hand-selected in 2023 to perform in the prestigious Just For Laughs festival in Montreal. She's touring the UK early next year - https://buff.ly/4he6Uxp

  • Did you know: Le Quesnoy is the little town in the north of France that was liberated by New Zealand soldiers after 4 long years of occupation. 106 years since the battle of 4 November 1918, Le Quesnoy remembers the sacrifice of those Kiwi soldiers. Join @te_arawhata_nzlm for a three-day experience centred on the 4 November commemorative service. A dinner in Valenciennes on 2 November will be followed by a visit to the incredible Wellington Tunnels of Arras, dug by the New Zealand Tunnelling Company in 1916, on the 3rd. The 4th will then focus on the story of the Liberation, with guided tours of the museum, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery at Le Quesnoy, and the 20-metre-high ramparts encircling the town. This emotional day will conclude with a private dinner alongside members of the Le Quesnoy-Nouvelle-Zélande Association, allowing visitors to more deeply connect with the incredible story and friendship between Le Quesnoy and Aotearoa. Le Quesnoy can be reached easily from London by train (via Lille), coach or plane (and then train, via Paris or Lille). The event will be conducted primarily in English, though there will be opportunities to pick up some French along the way! The New Zealand Liberation Museum – Te Arawhata – is based in Le Quesnoy and serves as New Zealand’s tūrangawaewae on the Western Front. Te Arawhata invites New Zealanders to come to Le Quesnoy to mark the anniversary of the liberation. All welcome – for tickets and more information, tap the @te_arawhata_nzlm bio.
