Last week NHS Lothian took part in the first ground-breaking trials flying lab samples between BioQuarter, next to Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh to NHS Borders' General Hospital. This is part of the ongoing Project CAELUS which aims to create the first national drone network that can transport essential medicines, bloods and other medical supplies throughout Scotland including to remote communities. NHS Lothian recently led a project to reduce waste and carbon emissions caused by incorrectly disposed inhalers. Across Scotland, respiratory disease is common, but the treatment for these conditions is a major carbon hotspot. The propellant gases in some inhalers have a global warming potential up to 3,220 times that of CO2. To tackle this, NHS Lothian’s pilot project, funded by the NHS Lothian Charity’s Climate Challenge Grant, involved community pharmacies adding stickers to inhaler dispensing bags, encouraging patients to return used, unwanted or expired inhalers for safe disposal. This simple step led to a 300% increase in returned inhalers over 10 weeks! Find out more: https://lnkd.in/ebFtVGkp

As part of a ground-breaking trial, laboratory specimens have been flown by drone from one NHS board to another. Flight trials took place this week between NHS Lothian’s Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and NHS Borders' General Hospital. Drones have the potential to play an important role in helping to transport samples for testing or speed up the delivery of critical medical supplies. This is part of Project CAELUS which is an AGS led consortium, of 16 partners to develop the UKs first medical delivery drone network: https://lnkd.in/etEa87bp
