Harry Chapman, research assistant in the Mood Disorders Clinic in Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, is taking part in the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) Mental Health Translational Research Collaboration Mental Health Mission Industry Internships Funding Programme. The Internship supports researchers’ training and development and promotes collaboration with industry. A ground breaking study has investigated the feasibility and acceptability of integrating smoking cessation treatment into routine psychological care for individuals with depression and anxiety. Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust played a crucial role in recruiting participants for the study, ensuring a diverse and representative sample. Additionally, University of Oxford’s Professor Paul Aveyard from our BRC was a contributing author. The research, led by NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre and the University of Bristol, involved a multi-centre, randomised controlled trial across four NHS Trusts in England. In recognition of World Down Syndrome Day 2025, the Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust Research & Development (R&D) team is raising awareness of the ABATE P2 study. The study team are seeking volunteers to test an investigational vaccine to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease in people with Down Syndrome. Today, R&D colleagues have a stall at Banbury Castle Quay Shopping Centre, where they will discuss the study with the public and hand out flyers. Scientists have found another clue about how brain health is maintained and how this might be affected by ageing and Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s, the main cause of dementia, is defined by a build-up of particular proteins in the brain which can spread and cause brain shrinkage affecting memory, thinking, and behaviour. Now, a team led by Dr Adam Al-Diwani at the University of Oxford, supported by NIHR Oxford Health Biomedical Research Centre (OH BRC), and with colleagues from UCL, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Mayo Clinic Neuro, have discovered the presence of these proteins in cervical lymph nodes in the neck. Significantly, more of the proteins were present in the lymph nodes of younger people than older people, suggesting that they drain away less well from the brain in older adults, potentially suggesting one contribution to the build-up in Alzheimer’s disease. This is the first direct demonstration of these ‘brain bins’ in humans. The finding were published in the journal Brain.
