A major new trial will test the efficacy of a new therapy for a disabling post-stroke condition that affects around 1 in 3 survivors. The study is being funded by a partnership between NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) and Medical Research Council and led by researchers at University of East Anglia . There are 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK, with an estimated 390,000 of those suffering from spatial inattention, for which there is currently no effective treatment. People affected by it often have poor recovery and long-term disability. However, a new therapy called SIGHT (Spatial Inattention Grasping Therapy) has showed promise in improving the condition. This trial will take a closer look at its effectiveness. https://lnkd.in/eve5DRth #WorldStrokeDay2024 #SpatialInattention

We’ve published our annual report and accounts, showcasing key milestones and successes achieved throughout the 2023/24 financial year. Some of these successes include: 🗞️ An innovative £42m prostate cancer screening trial, co-funded by us and @Prostate Cancer UK to find ways of detecting the country’s most common male cancer earlier. 🗞️ Our research invests in foundational underpinning science, facilities, talent and capacity building across the health and care workforce which makes the country and science superpower. Our Clinical Research Network supported the recruitment of 44 first participants to global studies, and to 558 commercial international studies overall in 2023/24, representing an increase in both measures compared to 2022/23. 🗞️ In 2023/24 we launched our first NIHR ‘Challenge’ funding call, investing £50 million into research to tackle inequalities in maternity care. 🗞️ Following the results from an NIHR-funded study, the UK Government has approved the use of digital pathology to help speed up analysis of cancer screening samples. Did you know before 2013, there were no vaccines to protect against Meningitis B, a leading infectious killer among young children? Dr Hannah Christensen’s influential work critically informed the roll out of a life-saving vaccine to protect children under 5. Supported by multiple NIHR career development awards, Dr Christensen alongside her team developed models that led to the rollout of a life-saving MenB vaccine for babies, with projected reduction of cases by over 25% in 5 years. Her work not only saved lives but also saved the NHS, Department of Health and Social Care £136 million annually.
