Last night we welcomed Scottish TV royalty Greg Hemphill (Victor from Still Game) and his wife Julie Wilson Nimmo (Miss Hoolie from Balamory) onboard the MV Hrossey. They have travelled North to spend a week in Orkney and then Shetland to film “Jules and Greg's Wild Swim - The Islands Adventure” out in Jan 2025 produced by Solus Productions. Here they are on the bridge of the MV Hrossey pictured L to R : Liam Cumming 2nd Officer, Steven Macleod Chief Officer, Mason Harcus Deck Cadet, Stevie McPherson Master and Bradley Johnson Able Seaman. STROMNESS Have you been lucky enough to sail into Stromness? I do like do draw and paint ships and boats and this time I have captured the MV Hamnavoe as it arrives in Stromness. I really enjoy the contrast of the bold white geometric ship to the stone and vernacular of the town’s rich townscape. What do you think? This was drawn in ballpoint and then watercoloured. I have spent a fair bit of time working for Nicoll Russell Studios Ltd in Orkney recently, in my role as a Conservation Architect. I really love the place and I am back on the Hamnavoe tomorrow morning sailing into Stromness first thing for work. The last time I was there I took a range of photographs capturing this view and then gradually created this in my studio. I think I will be drawing and painting some more scenes with the ship in it. For me the experience of sailing into Stromness and the inlet the ship is named after is magical. Stromness is a world class piece of townscape and seeing that from the ship framed by Hoy beyond is spellbinding. I would therefore always recommend that ferry journey. I may have my sketchbook tomorrow morning so if you spot me on the ship say hello and I have the original painting with me. I will be back on the Hamnavoe on Thursday night using its excellent bed and breakfast service which is always worth keeping an eye out for as Orkney is popular and it gives you more choice and a great experience too.
