About us
The Nuffield Department of Women's & Reproductive Health encompasses multi-disciplinary research across the full spectrum of women’s health. Our work has four overarching themes; Cancer, Global Health, Maternal & Fetal Health and Reproductive Medicine & Genetics. Our clinical and laboratory-based research programmes are based in the Women’s Centre, the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine (both at the John Radcliffe Hospital) and the Institute of Reproductive Sciences (IRS), Oxford Business Park. We have extensive collaborations with a number of University Science Departments and other research groups in the UK and abroad. The department's main offices are on level 3 of the Women’s Centre (John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford) which is responsible for the care of over 7,000 pregnant women and over 7,500 new gynaecology patients per year. The hospital is a tertiary referral centre for obstetric medicine, pre-natal diagnosis, endometriosis, reproductive medicine, IVF, urogynaecology and gynaecological oncology. In addition to undertaking worldwide acclaimed research, we also teach students and provide clinical care for Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. In 2008 we established the MSc Course in Clinical Embryology, a world-class course that has won numerous University awards for teaching innovation and excellence. Fantastic research opportunities to work in the new Pioneer Centre: SMARTbiomed.
The new Pioneer Centre SMARTbiomed, anchored at Aarhus BSS, aims to bring about fundamental research at the highest international level. By bringing together researchers with different areas of expertise from Aarhus BSS, University of Copenhagen and University of Oxford it will be possible to bridge research disciplines and bring about new knowledge within data-driven medical research. Ultimately, this research will support the treatment of common complex diseases and disorders. Director Naomi Wray says: “By bringing together people with different skill sets and different approaches we hope to achieve new synergies; that together they will be more than the sum of the parts.” Other co-directors who will help lead the pioneer centre are Preben Bo Mortensen, Bjarni Vilhjalmsson, Erin Gabriel, Cecilia Lindgren, Chris Holmes and Peter Visscher. A new study on chronic pelvic pain (CPP) has just been published in Science Direct. CPP is a debilitating condition, affecting millions of people worldwide (estimated prevalence of 26% worldwide) with persistent pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis that disrupts daily life. I’m excited to share the completion of both my thesis and my DPhil degree, after a successful defense. It’s been an incredible experience to carry out research at the forefront of the field, as well as row for the University at national and international level, including the famed Boat Races. I could not have done it without the support of Nuffield Dept of Women's & Reproductive Health, University of Oxford, in which I’ve had the privilege to work amongst some amazing researchers. I look forward to the completion of the corresponding paper, and the big jump into industry that lies ahead.
