Today, during the #ArticDeep taxonomic workshop, we were pleased to welcome students from Tromsø International School to have a close encounter with some deep sea specimens! Scientific outreach plays a vital role in inspiring the next generation to engage with the ocean. By giving students the chance to speak to the scientists and interact with preserved deep-sea specimens, we hope to spark curiosity about species discovery and maybe even a passion for marine science. Thank you to our partners UiT- The Arctic University of Norway for helping to facilitate not just the taxonomic workshop, but the chance to engage young people too. Credit also to our wonderful taxonomists from the Ocean Census Science Network, who gave up their time to show the students their work.

On this #WorldHabitatDay, we’re highlighting one of the ecosystems explored during the Ocean Census Arctic Deep expedition: deep sea hydrothermal vents. In the absence of sunlight, these unique deep-sea ecosystems rely on chemosynthesis, where organisms convert chemicals from the vents into energy, supporting a uniquely adapted assemblage of life. The Arctic deep sea remains one of the least explored areas for marine biodiversity, making the #ArcticDeep expedition a critical step in understanding these hidden ecosystems. The expedition team had the privilege of studying and sampling variety of deep-sea benthic habitats, including the Knipovich Ridge, Dumshaff Abyssal Plain, Jøtul vent field, the Svyatogor ridge, Molløy Deep and associated Alta seamount and other deep vent and seep sites, with a view to discovery of new species. Over the next couple of weeks, an international team of scientists from the Ocean Census Science Network are currently based in Tromso, Norway to analyse these samples. Thank you to our hosts UiT Norges arktiske universitet. 🗨️ Jon Copley

Alfredo Rosales is a researcher at Fundación Museo del Mar Ceuta with an interest in marine genetics, ecology, and exploration. Alfredo is one of the talented scientists joining us for the #ArcticDeep taxonomic workshop in Tromsø this month. The team are analysing the samples collected from the expedition back in May. The workshop will contribute to the understanding of Arctic #biodiversity, as well as hopefully growing the Ocean Census databank of new species. Find out what Alfredo is looking forward to, and his memories of the Arctic expedition. #PeopleOfTheOceanCensus #OceanCensus @nektonmission #TheNipponFoundation #ArcticDeep #MarineBiology #OceanConservation #Taxonomy

This October, an international team of scientists from the Ocean Census Science Network are gathering once again in #Tromsø, Norway. This time, instead of departing for the waves, they are staying on dry land to examine the samples from the Arctic Deep expedition. Taxonomic workshops bring experts together to accurately identify and classify specimens collected during expeditions, ensuring the reliability of the data. In this month’s taxonomic workshop, we’ll be building our understanding of Arctic biodiversity and making a note of any potential new species to science. Additionally, workshops offer valuable training for students and early-career scientists, fostering the development of the next generation of taxonomists. Keep an eye on our socials for updates from the Arctic Deep Taxonomic Workshop. 👀 Thank you to our hosts, and expedition partner, UiT Norges arktiske universitet. #ArcticDeep Nekton REV Ocean Alex Rogers Jon Copley #TheNipponFoundation #DeepSea #Taxonomy #SpeciesDiscovery #MarineScience

FREE Taxonomic training workshop in #Paris on Tropical Deep-Sea Sponges - December 2nd – 13th, 2024. Our friends at The Museum of Paris (MNHN) are organizing a 2-week Training Course on the Taxonomy of Tropical Deep-Sea Sponge from December 2nd to December 13th, 2024. Targeted audience are students, researchers, collection managers, and all professionals involved in the field of #biology, whatever their disciplines and levels (beginners, advanced, experts). The goal of the workshop is to bring together professional taxonomists and students (in the broad sense) around samples recently collected during the Tropical Deep-Sea Benthos Program and deposited in the MNHN collections to transmit taxonomic knowledge while speeding up digitization of natural collections. During 10 days, specimens will be sorted to the lowest taxonomic level possible and using best practices to taxa identification and data collection management, preservation, and traceability. In addition, there will be courses on Porifera taxonomy, evolutionary genetics, and deep-sea ecology. Further details are provided on the website of the DEST-CETAF: Upcoming courses - DEST (Distributed European School of Taxonomy) (cetaf.org) https://lnkd.in/e8VTiSKs Registration is free but necessary to anticipate coffee breaks and discussions. Registration deadline: November 15th, 2024 Don't forget to register by sending an email to: magalie.castelin@mnhn.fr #Taxonomy #DeepSeaSponges #OceanScience #SpongeBiology #MarineBiology #TaxonomicWorkshop #ScienceTraining
