Last week saw the launch of the New Homes in New Ways at the Building Centre. The exhibition tells a story, a provocation, a journey from despair, to hope. In the last decade, the UK built about 80,000 social rent homes. However, we lost about 160,000 of those homes to right to buy and demolition. Which means that over a decade we've lost 80,000 social rent homes in total. It's estimated that we need an additional 90,000 a year for 10 years to meet the social rent housing challenge. We're not talking about a tweak to a system - but a complete change in how we look at housing. It's a massive challenge, but one we believe it's possible to rise to. This exhibition explores an ecosystem solution approach and case studies of where organisations are making a difference around the country. It's open until February 2025 - please, come and see it. Exciting news! 🎉 BSI has been hard at work developing a new PAS 8700, which is now out for public consultation. This PAS sets out requirements for MMC (Modern Methods of Construction) in new build residential properties, covering multiple build types and materials for both single-use and mixed-use developments. What makes this document special? It addresses every stage of a building’s lifecycle—from project set up, design, and assembly to maintenance, repair, and even disassembly and recycling. The scope is comprehensive, including safety, risk management, skills development, information management, and systems manuals. A huge shoutout to the Steering Group who have been working tirelessly alongside the brilliant authors to shape this document. It’s been a challenging process, but their passion for the industry and dedication to shaping its future is truly inspiring.
