In collaboration with Global CCS Institute, we’ve published an assessment of potential #CCS hubs in northern Egypt. The report found: ➡️ Egypt's Climate Strategy 2050 needs robust CCS regulations ➡️Recent legal amendments could simplify approvals for CCS projects. ➡️Global incentives like tax credits and cap-and-trade systems offer models for Egypt. The key message is simple: If CCS is to be considered for managing CO2 emissions in #Egypt, regulators need to act fast and create policies that drive investment. #DidYouKnow? The transport sector accounts for nearly 25% of energy-related CO2 emissions. 🚢 With limited options to decarbonize shipping and aviation, we're focusing on a number of key areas including efficiency, low carbon fuels, hydrogen, and mobile CO2 capture. By combining strengths and collaborating across industries, we're driving down carbon impact and accelerating decarbonization solutions. Learn more on our website.

Reducing methane emissions rapidly is essential to meeting the goals of the #ParisAgreement. In 2022-23, we expanded our successful Satellite Monitoring Campaign to Algeria, Kazakhstan and Egypt to help more countries in the #OilAndGas sector cut methane emissions. This campaign has already enabled quick and sustainable greenhouse gas reductions and, based on these promising results, we’ll be extending it to even more countries and operators. Watch to learn about our top findings…

OGCI (Oil and Gas Climate Initiative) would like to thank to all our partners, stakeholders and colleagues who joined us at our anniversary breakfast during New York Climate Week this year. It was a pleasure to spend time with you all, and to reflect on the progress OGCI has over the past decade. Since our launch at Climate Week in 2014, OGCI has remained dedicated to accelerating action towards a net zero future. Through collaboration, we’ve made measurable progress, including a 50% reduction in upstream methane emissions and a 21% decrease in upstream carbon intensity. 📸 Highlights from our event by David Gray.

Our report on onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) shows the technology could help decarbonize shipping by reducing a vessel's CO2 emissions by as much as 20% per year. We carried out the engineering study with colleagues from Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD), Stena Bulk and a consortium of leading maritime organisations. It concludes the technology has the potential to help maritime transport significantly reduce its greenhouse gas emissions but identifies practical barriers, such as port readiness, to be addressed before OCCS can be widely adopted across the industry. The study was supported by American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Alfa Laval, Deltamarin, Lloyd's Register, Seatrium, and TNO.

The Energy Gang is kicking off it's #ClimateWeekNYC series by tackling one of the most debated topics in the energy industry. Ed Crooks is joined by Bjorn Otto Sverdrup, Chair of the The Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC), and Gernot Wagner, a climate economist from Columbia Business School, to explore the oil and gas sector's role in the energy transition. Bjorn discusses how oil and gas companies can use their resources to reduce emissions and develop low-carbon technologies, while Gernot stresses the importance of thinking beyond short-term fixes like methane reductions and focusing on long-term solutions that wean us off fossil fuels entirely. Should the oil and gas industry stick with business as usual while lowering emissions, or is a full transformation necessary? Plus, what role do policy and carbon pricing play in making the energy transition a reality? Listen now and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts, or keep an eye on our socials for more of the exclusive content we have lined up this week. https://okt.to/EITfSA

Eng Kiong Koh and I boarded Stena Bulk’s Stena Impero while it was in Singapore 🇸🇬. We assessed available deck space for an #LCO2 storage tank and identify an area to install an onboard carbon capture and storage system (#OCCS).🚢 Fast forward 2️⃣ years, we’re thrilled😆 to launch a report detailing the design considerations for an OCCS prototype onboard the Stena Impero. https://lnkd.in/gA-T5k4W OCCS involves a scrubber to extract CO2 from exhaust gases, a stripper to separate CO2 from the absorber (typically, an amine), a liquefaction unit to condense captured CO2, and a type-C tank to store LCO2 until it can be offloaded at port.🏗️ The study provides detailed engineering specifications, allowing CapEx to be estimated within +/- 15%. This design, having undergone HAZID and HAZOP reviews, has received Approvals-in-Principle from both American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Lloyd's Register.👍🏻 What struck me most was the trade-off between the desired CO2 capture rate and the capital and operational costs associated with such a retrofit.🧐 Carbon capture systems are highly energy-intensive, so much of our work focused on optimising the capture rate, which determines system size, build-out costs, and additional fuel use. For the Stena Impero, extra fuel is needed as waste heat from the reboiler alone is insufficient to power the system. Our optimisation resulted in a system that costs USD 13.6M, for a 20% annualised net CO2 avoided, at a 10% fuel penalty.😱 This retrofit enables the Stena Impero to maintain a “C or better” #CII rating (assumes 2% increase in reduction factor from 2027) for 9 more years, ensuring compliance over its remaining operational life.✅ Amortising the expenses over the vessel’s lifetime yields an abatement cost of USD 770 per ton of CO2.🙊 While the study indicates that economies of scale and system size increases can reduce cost by up to 75%, an OCCS retrofit remains a significant investment.💵 Decisions to deploy OCCS will therefore need to weigh the financial commitment against long-term commercial strategies to manage CII ratings over the vessel’s life. We also explored installing an OCCS on a new-build vessel with specifications similar to the Stena Impero. New builds present better economics compared to retrofits targeting similar capture rates.💹 As new vessels are initially CII-compliant, this also raises the question: should a new build be equipped with a full OCCS, or simply be “OCCS ready” so it can be deployed when needed?🤷🏻♀️ With no technical barriers, high abatement costs and the lack of port infrastructure are major bottlenecks for OCCS adoption. Our #offloading study highlighted some of these challenges. We are now scoping a pilot to help overcome them.👊🏻 https://lnkd.in/g5GsYSQH Stay tuned!📣 Thank you also OGCI (Oil and Gas Climate Initiative), Alfa Laval, Deltamarin, Seatrium, TNO for being great partners on Project #REMARCCABLE!🫶🏻 Together, we are stronger; together, we can💪🏻
