Researchers from the University of Glasgow have showcased their development of cutting-edge #space technology for visitors from the UK and Scottish Parliaments.   Gordon McKee, MP for Glasgow South, and Paul Sweeney, MSP for the Glasgow region, visited the University of Glasgow Advanced Research Centre on Friday 30 August to learn more about the University’s diverse range of space-related research. The main focus of the event was a presentation of the University’s student-led OirthirSAT #nanosatellite project, which won £600,000 in funding from the LaunchUK Nanosatellite Design Competition in 2021.   The competition, supported by the UK Space Agency, Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom and the Civil Aviation Authority, challenged students across the country to design a satellite capable of monitoring climate change from space. After hearing about the current and future projects from leaders in the Space Glasgow research group, Mr McKee and Mr Sweeney met student societies, researchers and academic staff for an informal poster session. The visitors had the opportunity to learn about ongoing research projects including the modelling of coastlines using satellite imaging, mission design for responsive space debris removal and attitude control of large space structures. Check out our Programme Engineering Manager Joe Gibbs' post and maybe consider reaching out to your local schools to give careers advice for #STEAM subjects!

PhD Candidate at University of Glasgow | Programme Engineering Manager at OirthirSAT | Flight Systems Mentor at GU Rocketry

🚀 I was thrilled to return to Albany Academy to give a presentation on careers in Engineering and the importance of #STEAM subjects in developing transferable skills. Some of the highlights included showing off some of the work from my PhD, OirthirSAT project, and GU Rocketry to Year 10 students who will be selecting subjects for further education in colleges and apprenticeships. While at Albany Academy I struggled to narrow down my subject choices for A-Levels as I had a broad range of interests from Politics to Astrophysics! As a compromise, I selected to study for an Aerospace Engineering degree to keep my options open, and a decade later, here I am still studying towards my PhD! Twelve years after leaving secondary school I was delighted to return to advise students beginning their journey into industry and higher education 🎓. Even today I could happily go off and pursue a non-engineering career, as the skills I have developed over the last ten years have provided a strong foundation of technical and soft skills which can be transferred to other sectors. I hope that some of you in my network will consider offering to present to your previous schools! Thanks to Jane Staniforth for helping to arrange the talk! It was a pleasure to present and a delight to see some friendly if somewhat aged faces! #STEAMEducation #HighSchool #Inspiration #Innovation #Science #Technology #Engineering #Mathematics #Aerospace #STEM
