As Ramadan comes to a close this Sunday, our Orion colleagues in Dubai got together earlier in the week to celebrate Iftar – the fast-breaking evening meal held during Ramadan when the adhan calls for Maghrib prayer. Held in the Sofitel in Downtown Dubai with other groups and businesses, Iftar is a community-based observance held after sunset, where the fast is traditionally broken with dates, water, fruits, and other small items. By taking part in the Iftar observance, it transcends cultural and social barriers, creating a space for empathy, mutual support, and intercultural dialogue, and as can be seen from the images below, Iftar highlights its role as both a religious tradition and a catalyst for social cohesion. #Ramadan #Iftar #Community #OrionGroup

In the final post in this month’s raising awareness of brain tumours, we also consider the financial impact of a brain tumour diagnosis. Adjusting to life after diagnosis will be difficult, deeply affecting the patient and their families as come to terms the effects of the tumour and the strain this can place on everyone connected. Experiencing life-limiting physical and psychological symptoms, brain tumour patients face long visits to specialist hospitals, increased time at home, rising bills, and costly home modifications. Brain Tumour Research reports that: · Brain tumour patients and their families face a £11,081 net loss of income. · Brain tumour patients face additional costs of £3,702 per year. · Brain tumour patients are on average £14,783 worse off per year, whereas for all cancers the average cost is £6,840 per year. When you also add to this that patients are required to surrender their driving license this inevitably means a loss of independence and their reliance on other significantly increases. The event marked a meaningful occasion during the holy month of Ramadan, offering an opportunity for attendees to break their fast and share in the joy of the season. Brain Tumour Awareness Month   Receiving a diagnosis that you have a brain tumour would be devastating news. For over 12,000 people each year in the UK, this is the news they will receive. Unless metastasising from another form of cancer, such as breast, lung, or melanoma, no single definitive cause has yet been identified for primary brain tumours. Symptoms of a brain tumour will depend upon which part of the brain is affected. The most common symptoms are caused by an increase in pressure in the skull (intracranial pressure) and the growth of a tumour in the brain. Some of the common warning signs will include frequent or severe headaches, nausea and vomiting, vision problems, seizures, weakness or numbness, speech difficulties or cognitive changes such as confusion, memory loss, and difficulty concentrating. If you recognise these these symptoms, do not delay in seeking professional medical advice to check the cause, even though they may be more commonly symptomatic of other illnesses or diseases.   While brain tumours remain among the most challenging cancers to treat, significant advancements in research offers hope. Today, treatments range from surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy to cutting-edge options like targeted therapies and immunotherapy. Innovative technologies such as MRI-guided surgery and tumour-treating fields are also improving precision and outcomes.   However, awareness of the devastation caused by brain tumours is low, and brain tumour research represents just 1% of national spend on cancer. At this rate, it could take one hundred years for brain cancer to catch up with developments in other diseases and find a cure.   There is always more that we can do to support it.
