The UN Office on Drugs and Crime in Bangkok reports a significant increase in industrial-scale #cyberfraud activities throughout Southeast Asia, attributed to transnational criminal networks utilizing advanced technological tools and complex underground banking systems. In response, a recent meeting in Bangkok, organized by #UNODC, brought together regional investigators and analysts to establish an network aimed at enhancing intelligence sharing and collaborative countermeasures. According to John W., UNODC Regional Analyst, cyber-enabled fraud by transnational criminal networks have grown into a multi-billion-dollar industry that surpasses the GDP of several Southeast Asian countries. The threat landscape is evolving rapidly, with indications of #deepfakes, malware, and a convergence with illegal online gambling and the drug trade. John notes that governments are increasingly aware that traditional methods of investigation and prosecution are insufficient to address this issue, and urgent action is needed.
