The UK Chancellor's speech today highlighted a crucial insight: there is no trade-off between economic growth and achieving net zero. Our latest research at Oxera confirms that the complex global challenge of reaching net zero could in fact be a £multimillion opportunity for the UK economy. LinkedIn is buzzing with the news today that the UK Chancellor has made a speech on #growth including setting out the start of a process for testing a third #runway at #Heathrow Airport. I was reminded of an article that a former Board member at BAA, Mike Toms, wrote for Oxera's Agenda publication in 2018, the last time the government gave its wholehearted backing to the scheme. As more drivers switch to electric vehicles, in line with the UK and EU target of all new vehicles being zero emission by 2035, fuel duty revenues will decline. Governments will need to find alternative ways to fund road infrastructure without placing an additional financial burden on environmentally conscious drivers. This could lead to resistance from both consumers and electric vehicle manufacturers.
