🌿 The complex reality of wildlife trade 🌿 From subsistence hunting to criminal smuggling networks, wildlife trade is vast and multifaceted. The Oxford Martin Programme on Wildlife Trade is investigating how to balance conservation, policy, and community needs. 📊 Did you know? - The illegal wildlife trade is the 4th largest illicit industry globally. - Almost 900,000 pangolins have been poached from 2000-2019. - CITES regulates trade in 41,000+ species, but challenges remain. 🧐 So, what’s the solution? Our researchers say science-based policies, behavioural interventions, and stronger governance are essential to making wildlife trade sustainable. 📽️ Watch the new video & read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/efpjBf-f University of Oxford Department of Biology, University of Oxford E.J. 📣 New Hub seeks to transform agricultural research towards a more sustainable and resilient future 🌾 Introducing the Agricultural Resilience Impact & Innovation Hub (AGRIIH) 🌾 Agriculture is both a fundamental pillar of our food system and a major driver of #biodiversity loss and #greenhousegas emissions worldwide. Led by Jennifer Lucey with Jing Zhang as Project & Knowledge Exchange Lead, the AGRIIH is designed to enhance the real-world impact of Oxford’s agricultural research by fostering close collaboration between academia, industry, and other stakeholders. 🤝 Get involved! We are currently building the AGRIIH community ➡️ Find out more and sign up to the mailing list here: https://lnkd.in/eniVqHg2 Department of Biology, University of Oxford School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford Oxford Martin School Oxford Martin Programme on the Future of Food Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment - University of Oxford #AgriculturalResearch #AgriculturalTransformation #FoodSystems

#OxfordSmithSchool Harriet Bartlett and Michael Clark are co-authors of this research paper that analysed diverse livestock production systems worldwide to identify pathways for enhanced sustainability. Harriet said: “Farmers are key to building a sustainable future, but a single approach won’t suffice. Success requires meaningful consideration of social, cultural, economic, and environmental contexts.” The researchers examined case studies across diverse agro-ecological regions, including the United States, Latin America, Brazil, England, Africa, Australia and the Tibetan Plateau of China. They considered economic, environmental, and social factors, finding evidence that context-specific solutions are crucial, highlighting the need for tailored interventions, policies, and investments that acknowledge the unique circumstances of different livestock systems. For your weekend reading: what are nature-based solutions and how can they play a role in responsible greenhouse gas removal (GGR)? Can we count any form of GGR that involves a biological process as a nature-based solution, or do we need stricter criteria? Dr John Lynch, who worked as a CO2RE researcher until the end of last year, reflects on these questions and more in a new Q&A for our website: https://lnkd.in/ebJAxHWj Oxford Martin School The Agile Initiative Nature-Based Solutions Initiative Department of Biology, University of Oxford

Are Electric Cars as Green as You Think? In our latest #thoughtshot video, Dr. Hannah Ritchie, Author, Data Scientist and Senior Researcher at The Oxford Martin School at the University of Oxford proves that over the long term electric vehicles are indeed as green as we think. Buying an electric car came with a big question: Is it really better for the environment? The answer wasn’t always obvious as research on emissions from battery production suggested that EVs started with a “carbon debt” compared to petrol or diesel cars. “An electric vehicle quickly pays off its carbon debt, within just two years of driving. Over its lifetime, it can cut emissions by half or more compared to petrol or diesel cars. And the best part? It only gets cleaner as we decarbonize our electricity grids.” Dr. Ritchie's work at Our World in Data has consistently revealed surprising truths behind our assumptions about sustainability. Her data-driven approach cuts through ideological noise to reveal what actually works for our planet. Recently honored as a 2024 Royal Statistical Society Fellow, Dr. Ritchie brings unparalleled clarity to complex environmental challenges through her work with Oxford Martin School, Ember Energy Think Tank and the Just Transition Commission. 📢 New Policy Brief How can the UK and EU enhance AI security while respecting their distinct mandates? Our latest policy brief explores strategic alignment between the UK AI Security Institute (AISI) and the European AI Office, using a four-tier framework - Collaboration, Coordination, Communication, and Separation - to maximise impact while maintaining autonomy. 🔹Collaborate on global standards and international engagement 🔹 Coordinate on evaluation methodologies and interoperability 🔹 Communicate via structured risk monitoring and incident reporting 🔹 Separate where strategic autonomy and confidentiality are paramount By leveraging these structured synergies, both institutions can streamline participation in AI summits, ensure consistent safety evaluations, and enhance cross-border AI security—all while maintaining their unique roles. Our key recommendation is for policy practitioners in both jurisdictions, within public bodies or civil society, to concretise these avenues and provide more detailed guidance for their implementation.
