This Monday, the #PathwaysToPlanning team welcomed graduates from cohorts 1 & 2 for a graduate welcome day in London. Attendees heard from colleagues at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, the Royal Town Planning Institute, and the Planning Advisory Service (PAS) about the latest in the planning sector, and the vital role they have to play. The grads networked and got to know each other better, as well as hearing from fellow councils about the journey of their graduates on the scheme. Events like this are a key part of the Pathways to Planning scheme; giving our graduates a space to build connections and develop a holistic understanding of local government planning and how it can build and develop communities. Look at the way your community was constructed in the past – does it meet the way that people there live now? Are the spaces accessible, fit for purpose, and meeting the needs of the people that live there? Meeting these needs and providing spaces that reflect their communities is the job of a Planner. Local councils are there to serve, and you could be a part of giving back. Whatever your experience, whether it be as someone with caring responsibilities, from a specific background, or religious community, it is vital to helping design communities and build functional spaces. We need this broad range of experience and knowledge of how your community functions to build villages, towns, and cities that meet the diverse needs of the people that live there. Bring your experience to a rewarding career and apply now for cohort 3 of #PathwaysToPlanning: https://lnkd.in/e-fBRQGt. #LocalGov #Planning #EDI

What will I learn as part of the master's course? As part of the #PathwaysToPlanning graduate scheme, grads study for a fully-funded master's in Planning. Employing councils partner with different universities across the country, choosing courses based on the needs of the council and interest of their graduate. Several universities across England offer RTPI-accredited courses (RTPI = Royal Town Planning Institute), and in London, two popular choices are UCL and London South Bank University. But what do grads learn on the course? The Bartlett School of Planning UCL's Spatial Planning Degree Apprenticeship MSc (https://lnkd.in/en7aK7Fi) is a course 'about managing space and developing places to meet societal, economic, and environmental needs' the learning is complemented by grads' work at their council, and on the course they learn: - About how people, places, and the environment evolve and interact - How to manage spaces and develop places to meet the needs of society, the environment, and the economy - About regional and urban planning issues in the UK, current systems, and how they compare to the rest of the world - About integrated planning solutions and how they can achieve sustainable development goals - How to understand social and physical dynamics, and how actions shape places - About their more specific Planning interests through elective modules, e.g., Investigating Urban Transformation in Historic Cities; Planning for Sustainability; Climate Change and Inclusion; Smart City Theory and Practice All of these and more give the graduates the skills and accreditation to be Town Planners and rise in the field. As part of the #PathwaysToPlanning graduate scheme, grads study for a fully-funded masters' degree in Planning alongside their full-time, salaried role as a Planner. Here are some facts and figures about the university study part of the scheme: - There are two routes: master's and apprenticeship. Different councils will select different options, and with both routes you'll receive a master's degree at the end (MA or MSc). At interview stage, you'll be able to see the study offer and which university the council will be working with. - You will have paid time off to study - Pathways graduates are usually at university (on campus) once a week. - Don't worry about choosing a course - your employing council will do the legwork and find the most appropriate qualification for you, and you'll be supported through the application. Whether you're about to graduate, graduated 10 years ago, or already have a postgraduate qualification - we are open to you.
