This week we welcomed 140 young people, from Tees Valley Education multi-academy trust schools to Teesport, exposing them to the world of Ports and Logistics. Through our bespoke programme the Teesport Explorers aiming to tackle skills gaps, challenge stereotypes and raise aspirations among primary school children we chose to educate our young guests on careers involving crane operations. The children heard from one of our bulks crane operators Martin, and heard first hand what it's like to drive a crane. They also talked to our Crane Engineer, Jamie, who recently completed his apprenticeship. Who spoke about his role and the importance of PPE in keeping him safe. The children then put into practice some of the things they'd heard about. Alan, our Competency Team Lead took them through a Lego crawler crane operators course, safely lifting and handling cargo and gaining their certificate of competence. Finishing the session, the children experienced being inside a crane on our crane simulator, having a go at lifting Bulk Cargo from the hold of the vessel and loading the hopper, the job that Martin does and talked about. We've sent them away to Design a crane of the future and can't wait to see what they come up with. We really hope they enjoyed their day and look forward to welcoming them back to shine the spotlight on other careers here at PD Ports. As a business, we recognise that the earlier in life children are exposed to career experiences, the greater the impact and the greater the chance of positively influencing perceptions. We have set ourselves the target to introduce 3,000 young people to the ports and maritime sector by 2030 through our partnerships with the High Tide Foundation, Power Of Women💥 and of course our very own Teesport Explorers programme.
