FEA ENSURES FIRST TIME PASS DURING DYNAMIC TESTING Our team of dedicated analysis experts has extensive experience in applying advanced engineering software to solve complex technical problems for valve and actuator manufacturers. For example, a key supplier of butterfly valves needed to seismically test a range of valves to validate their designs. Building prototypes was not feasible due to very tight project deadlines. The valves were to be used in a safety-critical defence application, and it was vital that they could withstand a range of extreme loading including seismic and shock events. PDL analysts were able to validate each valve design for the seismic design spectra used on the shaker table tests and considered a range of disc positions and valve orientations in close collaboration with the test house team. Using ANSYS, ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL) and ANSYS Design Modeler, they defined a representative computational model and ensured that the load path between components were accurately defined. To capture the seismic response of the valves, a response spectrum analysis was used. A modal analysis calculated the natural frequencies of the valve and the relevant modal mass. The results were scrutinised to ensure that the response of the components was representative and that the range of frequencies captured the total mass of the assemblies. Following this stage, the response spectrum analysis was solved using the relevant seismic spectra for each of the orthogonal directions. The results of the analyses were combined using the square root sum of the squares (SRSS) method and results were assessed against the relevant allowable stresses. When the manufactured valves were physically tested, they all passed the test successfully. The team successfully decreased the risk for the client by allowing the valves to be ‘tested’ in the virtual world prior to manufacture. NUCLEAR DECOMMISSIONING PROJECT The PDL team has a long track record of providing advanced engineering analysis and support to major projects across the three major facets of the nuclear industry, new build, life extension and decommissioning. A challenging decommission project saw the team support a front-end engineering design (FEED) study for new a dry storage facility which stored intermediate-level waste (ILW) in 8,000 steel drums. The team were tasked with assessing the ventilation system of the existing and proposed new facility. The team used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to assess the ventilation system and explored multiple system design parameters in a matter of days. This saved our client a substantial amount of time and also cost-saving over practical instrumentation and testing. Furthermore, the creation of the virtual CFD environment rather than calculations vastly enhanced the ease for non-technical staff to visualise results, from spot values to contour plots and streamlines. Bravo! The PDL team were declared The Champions at the inaugural SUT - Society for Underwater Technology, North of England Branch’s First Annual Pub Quiz at As You Like It in Jesmond on 24 September 2024. Congratulations to Stuart Rich, Paul Hadfield, Joe Bell, Scott Bell, Thomas Johnson and Elizabeth Waterman. Well done to all the teams who battled for the crown, and special thanks to the Quiz Master Jon Greenwood for asking questions such as: · How much of the ocean’s floor has been explored as of June 2024 and how much of land remains unexplored? · How far did Boaty McBoatface travel in its recent ocean odyssey and what was it looking for? · Where did Jacques Piccard boldly go? · Where is the Widdell Sea, and what was discovered there in March 2022? Thank you Vahid Walker for organising a wonderful evening. #engineeringexcellence #technicalsolutions #dreamteam #championes

PDL are the engineering analysis experts. The team has a huge breadth and depth of tank systems expertise and extensive experience, spanning two decades of successfully applying advanced engineering software to deliver technical solutions to complex problems. Our analysts have worked on a wide range of challenging and interesting tank projects throughout the life cycle. Here are some recent examples: NEWBUILD - Kerosene refinery system performance: evaluations of tanks, piping and pumping facilities using Simulink to identify multiple improvements. - LNG tank Design: 3D buckling analysis for to understand the effects of self weight, thermal contraction and external pressure differentials. - Chlorine contact tank: Modelling and optimisation to determine the regions of stagnant flow, contact time and flow rate. OPERATION & MAINTENANCE - Improvements to LNG Tank capability: Structural analysis to evaluate the stresses and deflections (thermal, pressures, sloshing and inertia loads). - Investigating solid settlement and likelihood of pipe blockage: Detailed modelling of a deep tunnel sewerage system (air and water). - Aeration tank design optimisation: Multiphase CFD model used to determine the efficiency of water and air mixing. FAILURE - Incorrectly built dry-seal gasholder: The analytical model was created based upon 3D lazer scans. Structural dynamic assessment and failure modes were replicated within the model which was used as a virtual test bed for corrective actions. DECOMM -Life extension and decommissioning of Nuclear site settling tanks and waste streams: Consideration of air velocity and temperature distributions leading to new HVAC concepts within the confines of the existing infrastructure. TANK FAILURE ASSESSMENT The PDL team completed a safety assessment of the implications to personnel, the facility and the environment of a catastrophic failure of one of the fuel tanks at a diesel fuel storage. The facility consisted of a pair of cylindrical tanks contained within a fluid-tight bund with a perimeter wall to contain any spillage. Detailed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis simulated the instantaneous failure of the tank and explored the overtopping volumes, peak wave heights, transient pressure on the bund wall and transient pressure on the adjacent tank. Multiphase air-liquid free-surface simulations were implemented using the Shear Stress Transport model. Initial assessment to BS8777;1987/Eurocode 2 using PTC Creo, PTC Mathcad, ANYS DesignModeler, and ANSYS CFD. Applying transient CFD analysis allowed us to understand some interesting fluid effects which would not have been predicted by calculations alone, and computer-aided engineering (CAE) methods allowed us to complete the task in a fraction of the time and cost.
