Architecture and Planning

Utilising digital tools to ensure planning policies and design proposals deliver social, economic & environmental value

About us

PLACE LOGIC uses network analysis software to produce computer-generated maps which bring out the underlying forces which shape our towns and cities, all of which have a major impact on the quality of the urban environment. Unlike other modelling systems which rely on costly and time- consuming data-collection, PLACE LOGIC uses readily available maps as source material and provides outputs quickly and economically. These can be used as stand-alone media or as explanatory aids in more complex models. The principle behind PLACE LOGIC is that successful places depend on two important and inter-related factors: a logical movement network and an appropriate distribution of functions. Towns and cities are highly complex entities and case studies have demonstrated that there is a remarkably close correlation between connectivity and viability, so explaining why some places ‘work,’ and others do not.

In collaboration with the University of Strathclyde's Urban Design Studies Unit, we're developing a walkability index that redefines what makes cities walkable, looking beyond amenities to include urban form, greenery, and thermal comfort. Our latest literature review, 'Walkability Indices—The State of the Art and Future Directions,' explores how urban design impacts pedestrian activity and social connectivity, paving the way for better public spaces. ✨ The planning system can be transformational ✨ If properly resourced and with the right policy levers available, it can - and should - play a central role in tackling the pressing issues of our time. Join us later this month at the TCPA Annual Conference where we'll explore how a more ambitious and visionary planning system can help address the housing, health, climate and nature crises. Speakers include Sir Michael Lyons (Chair, New Towns Taskforce) and Joanna Averley (Chief Planner, Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government). Tuesday 26 November: 10 am – 4 pm Venue: Regent’s University, Inner Circle, Regent’s Park, London, NW1 4NS https://lnkd.in/gMr-hSgK

Our survey on the pedestrian experience of the urban environment will close today at 6 pm GMT. Earlier this year, we launched a psychological survey across Glasgow, London, and Winchester to gather responses on how people perceive and feel about different urban environments. The survey has been a resounding success! So far, 191 respondents have made a total of 2,260 evaluations.  A heartfelt thank you to everyone who visited our gazebo and contributed to the survey in person or through our online platform. A special thanks goes to Karina Garces-Mirza and Paola Pasino at the Glasgow City Council for organising and allowing us to be a part of the Glasgow Walking and Wheeling Festival. Equally, we are grateful to Winchester City Council and the Westminster City Council for allowing us to set up on the High Street and the Strand, two of the most vibrant areas of these cities. If you haven't had the chance to participate yet but would like to before the closure, the survey link is provided below. Your input is invaluable! https://lnkd.in/dNrKa3-w

Alessandro Venerandi, our senior spatial analyst, recently attended the International Seminar on Urban Form (ISUF) in São Paulo. Alessandro participated in the conference to present the results of a correlation analysis between the outcomes of our survey on psychological responses of people in three UK cities—Glasgow, London, and Winchester—and metrics describing their morphological structures. If you're interested in exploring how urban design influences psychological well-being, read more via the link below. The full paper will be available soon in the conference proceedings. https://lnkd.in/exQ8jCF2

Let's take a look back at one of our case studies🤓 As part of the Masters in Science degree in Urban Design at the University of Strathclyde, our team conducted a PLACE LOGIC analysis of Govan, Glasgow, to explore opportunities for reconnecting this historic area with the wider city. By proposing a new bridge over the River Clyde and strategic street reconnections, our analysis revealed significant potential to better integrate Govan into Glasgow's urban core. These changes aim to spur economic regeneration and strengthen community ties, demonstrating how thoughtful urban design can transform local connectivity🤝 In the diagrams below, place connectivity is measured on a gradient from more connected areas (red) to less connected areas (blue).

Ever wondered how cities thrive on well-connected intersections? 💭 Introducing Place Connectivity – a crucial metric measuring the average shortest-path distance between each intersection and nearby intersections within a network at defined radius. Just like Street Activity, this measure influences land use distribution, density, and even land valuation! From pinpointing ideal spots for commercial centres to identifying key civic functions, Place Connectivity offers invaluable insights into urban planning and development. So, whether you're a city planner, developer, or simply fascinated by the urban landscape, dive deep into Place Connectivity to unlock the secrets of our bustling metropolises 🔍 🧐 Stay tuned for more updates on how we're shaping the future of cities!
