🌍 Homes that Don't Cost the Earth (#HDCE)- Affordability within planetary boundaries. The UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP), along with Arup, Dark Matter Labs, and Rising Tide, is excited to announce the launch of a new project to reorient the UK housing strategy towards the goal of truly affordable homes for all. IIPP Professor Josh Ryan-Collins, PhD Candidate Stefan Horn, and Research Fellow Dr Beth Stratford will be providing key insights from their own research, and collaborating with our partners and a diverse network of public sector, industry, and civil society leaders spanning a range of housing-related specializations, including planning and policy, construction, climate, fuel poverty, biodiversity, renters’ rights, finance, tax, and law, to: 1️⃣ build on the work that’s already been done to develop a range of policy, financial, and technical interventions that will enable the UK to provide affordable homes for all, while protecting and enhancing our environment; 2️⃣ provide research to demonstrate impact and feasibility, where there are gaps in the evidence base; 3️⃣ bring stakeholders together to hammer out solutions where change could bring potential unintended consequences; 4️⃣ support new relationships and alliances that can move these solutions from the realm of ideas to implementation. 🔗 Learn more about the project here: https://lnkd.in/gZCzW9NQ Thanks to the Laudes Foundation for supporting this project.

📌 It was a pleasure to join some of my fabulous colleagues to represent both Brabners and LDN Collective at MIPIM 2025. Despite the rain, it was my busiest and most productive MIPIM. It was non-stop, but I loved every minute of it! 🙌🏻 The week was jam-packed with fantastic panel discussions and speakers. It’s hard to summarise in a short post what the key themes and takeaways from the week are, but the ongoing housing crisis/unworkable construction costs/requirement for improved infrastructure and a more efficient planning process/Old Trafford regeneration including the new Man Utd stadium/and the need to connect international capital with UK regeneration etc were recurring themes. We were privileged to hear from some high profile speakers too - Manchester and London were well represented at a senior level (the Chief Executive of Manchester City Council Tom Stannard, GM Mayor Andy Burnham, Leader of Manchester Council Bev Craig and Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan to mention a few), which created a real buzz to draw in the crowds and kick start some interesting discussions. 🤔 Some themes do crop up time and time again at property events, and what is really important is that action is taken to continue to develop solutions to the problems and to actively work together in doing so. MIPIM is just the start of this and the hard work must continue! 👏🏻 A special shout-out to Dino Moutsopoulos and the Place North team for supporting Brabners as part of their delegation. Thank you! 👇🏻 Sam Crothers Joanne Parr Kathryn Holland Dino Moutsopoulos

What an incredible week at MIPIM 2025 it was! There are far too many reflections to capture in a single post. It was truly fantastic to reconnect with many, catch up, and make so many new connections! 🌟 But if I have to :) The highlight, of course, was the opportunity to discuss the importance of creating spaces that work for women and young people at such a high-level event during our panel session on 24h Cities, perfectly timed with #CSW69 and #Women’sHistoryMonth! Huge thanks to the amazing Katherine Fleming who chaired our session brilliantly and highlighted the importance of inclusive design. And a massive thanks to Bonnie Ross and her team for bringing us all together! Noah Taiwo Richard Crawford Maciej Fijalkowski 🌟 A truly special treat was an opening party hosted by Jack Pringle PPRIBA and Helen Cadzow at the stunning Maison Des Citrons, designed by Jack himself! Thank you! 🌟 A special shout-out to Max Farrell for working his magic in bringing a fantastic group of people together for the LDN Collective dinner! I’m beyond honoured to be part of this incredible collective of wonderful people and fantastic professionals. 🌟 And of course, thanks to Mabel Ogundayo for inviting me to 'crush' their roundtable on Social Value as part of the World Economic Forum & Avison Young session on their recently published handbook which is a must-read.

MIPIM 2025 🌴 A concern raised this week was the risk of losing built environment talent from the UK to other countries. BUT seeing the incredible promotion of UK cities—at our UK Cities & Partners reception, at the UK Hub, and across stunning city and regional stands—it’s hard to imagine why anyone would leave. The UK put on a SHOW. Seeing the energetic atmosphere on The London Stand at MIPIM and genuine friendship between delegates epitomised to me that while, yes, there were other impressive global showcases, working in and with the UK is unbeatable. This was strengthened by the delegation from the Greater London Authority, including Sadiq Kahn, Jules Pipe, Tom Copley, Howard Dawber and Lucinda Turner. Attending MIPIM alongside other UK mayoral delegations, the GLA made visible the political commitment to growth that is another firm marker of the UK's attractiveness. Conversation and collaboration being central to the conference content on the London Stand, it's a good time to add that I’ve loved working again over the past (many, many) months with a brilliant collection of people on its conference programme and marketing: ⭐ The amazing White Label Creative team – primarily Amy Walsh, Samyama Kolhapuri, Julie Leggatt and Rachel Knowles, but it's a full team effort! ⭐ Our fantastic clients – Jake Tappenden-Lowe, Emmanuelle Gueppe, Peter de Soissons and Ronda McHenry- Annesley. ⭐ Partners at Opportunity London / NLA – Emily Gabb (Wilson), Isabel Alonzo, Benjamin O'Connor and Sophie Goff. ⭐ The Sleek Event Lab – Shenyana Lim. ⭐ And all the exhibitors, speakers and stakeholders who help make it such a success. Beyond London, White Label enjoyed supporting the fantastic delegations from LB Hounslow, Slough Council and Mott MacDonald, and I personally enjoyed attending some great events, including: ✔ The LDN Collective dinner (thanks Max Farrell) ✔ BusinessLDN drinks reception and brunch (thanks Sean Fleetwood) ✔ Redwood drinks (thanks Kate Bourne, Debbie Cracknell and Gabriel Abulafia) ✔ LCA/NLA drinks (thanks Jane Groom, Jonny Popper, Nick McKeogh Hon FRIBA) ✔ Our own UKCAP reception (stellar job Raj Singhal and Jon Lister) ✔ The ever-brilliant Trowers & Hamlins brunch (thanks Nicholas Barrows, David Cordery, Sara Bailey) ✔ Team picnics! (thanks Katharine Glass) ✔ Receptions with Newcastle (thanks Richard Dawson) and Manchester. And of course, no MIPIM is complete without karaoke. Continuing the Ross and Matt tradition, Emily and I made sure it was a highlight of the week, twice!! 🎤 Despite some adverse weather (which the record-breaking UK delegation may or may not have brought with them!), it was a week full of strong UK messaging, inspiration, valuable meetings, and a lot of fun. p.s. I also visited Fondation Maeght before MIPIM this year and can't recommend it enough if you're a fan of modern art.

Lady Sue Farrell: 1946 - 2025 It was devastating to say goodbye to my mum this week. I'm just grateful I was able to drop everything at MIPIM and fly back in time to be by her side, with my brother Luke Farrell & sister Milly Farrell. Many of you will have known Sue, either personally or professionally. As well as being a "Super Mum" for the three of us and our half sisters Bernardine Farrell, Ph.D. FRSA & Jo Farrell, she was an accomplished public realm strategist and interior designer, with an incredible eye for colour. We wanted to make sure this was recognised, so I have written an article highlighting some of her achievements 🎨 🌇 Her leading role on the cultural strategy and commissioning of public art for Newcastle Quayside was, in my view, one of the most successful public realm projects of the late twentieth century. When my dad Terry was awarded the keys to the city of Newcastle, many people talked about the pivotal role my mum played. We are thinking of commissioning a permanent memorial, perhaps a plaque or something that recognises the contribution she made to the Quayside (as well as other projects she led on like the Dean Gallery in Edinburgh) 🌊 Thank you Mum, for being such an inspiration and teaching us all to live every day to the full, which she most definitely did during her 79 years. To quote my cousin Andrea "Auntie Sue was larger than life, the soul of creativity and absolutely unique in this world. As a mother and grandmother she could always 'kiss it better' and somehow, magically, see the funny side of any situation. She was a style icon, with enormous artistic vision" 🙏🏻 RIP Mum...we miss you 💔 Farrells, Duncan Whatmore, Gary Young, Simon Sturgis, Neil Bennett, Julian Tollast, Andy Bow, Newcastle City Council, Karen Kilgour, Pam Smith, Michelle Percy FRICS, Jenny Hartley MBE, Farrell Centre, Owen Hopkins, LDN Collective

Great to be quoted as a highlight of MIPIM in this round up by Susan Freeman 🎤🎧 for Property Week 🙌 “I sat in on the Sport and Placemaking panel on The London Stand at MIPIM. The experience economy is of course part of the Mayor of London’s growth plan. People want experiences not material goods. Max Farrell of LDN Collective pointed out what a great asset the Premier League is for the UK and that if you buy a football club, you buy the city. Farrell is collaborating with Muse on a new vision for the Royal Docks as a global destination with sports as its focus along with leisure and entertainment. It will provide the opportunity to create jobs, affordable housing, social impact and to put the Royal Docks on the map.” Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan | Greater London Authority | London Borough of Newham | Paul Kitson | The Royal Docks Team | Daniel Bridge | Excel London | University of East London | Hilary Lissenden | AESG | LCA | Gbolade Design Studio | Architects | RCKa | PJA | Sidara | Introba | Portland Design | SHL - Schmidt Hammer Lassen | Currie & Brown | Carlo Castelli | Exterior Architecture Ltd | Howard Dawber | JLL | Thomas Stevenson | Savills | Julian Carter | Opportunity London | Selina Mason | Department for Business and Trade | Gus Wiseman | Creative Estuary #wearecitymakers #collectivelyspeaking #MiPIM2025

MIPIM day two done ✔️ ⚾️ As always the BusinessLDN lunch was like a roll call for the big hitters. Great to hear from Claire Holland chair of London Councils and Jules Pipe Deputy Mayor for Planning. Lots of discussions with London Boroughs about the Wates Group-led consortium which the LDN Collective are part of, with modular transitional housing to get families out of dire B&Bs and hostels. Pressure is growing to introduce a new class of permitted development to streamline planning, like we did during Covid for the Nightingale hospitals 🏥 💚Always so much to talk about with Richard Cook from Clarion Housing Group, this time the Building Safety Act and the impact uncertainty and delays are having on investment and development. Some great examples of modular homes for homeless they have built in Leeds with St Mungo's Over to the The London Stand at MIPIM and a panel on the night time economy with #LDNCollective member Marina Milosev getting a lot of support for her approach to gender equitable and safe spaces for women and girls 🙌 Good to hear Neil Hook from Homes England talk about growth potential in the Oxford to Cambridge Arc. Our vision for a 21st century market town in Huntingdonshire led by Phoenix Sustainable Investments, with 4,500 homes and a green technology and manufacturing hub, will help ‘levelling up’ within the Arc 🌈 🏟️ I enjoyed speaking about #sports & #placemaking with Selina Mason, Laura Citron OBE, Gus Wiseman chaired by Kat Hanna. The main takeaways for me were that healthy, active lifestyles can be enabled by thoughtful public realm; stadiums and arenas are catalysts for placemaking when planned properly; the last 5-10 years have been a step change for investment in sports, leisure & culture requiring the right financial models and analysis of wider social and environmental benefits. ⭐️ Great to catch up with The Developers Club, a community for young developers to share, exchange and collaborate. The Invest Newcastle dinner lived up to it's reputation as the best in Cannes. This year's speaker was David Ginola the legendary Newcastle United Football Club player, at a time when the stadium redevelopment is on the cards and the whole city is going places. My favourite quote "It's a city with a big heart. If you invest in Newcastle, they will invest in you" 🌉 Thanks to everyone I met and chatted to. There are so many genuine and passionate people in the built environment sector, who recognise the need to work together to address the big issues of our time 🌏 #climatechange #housingemergency #socialinequalities. 🇫🇷Au Revoir....looking forward to next year already (and UKREiiF of course!)🇬🇧 #wearecitymakers #collectivelyspeaking #mipim2025
