The Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA)
International Affairs
A coalition of governments and businesses working to advance the transition away from unabated coal power generation.
About us
The Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) is a coalition of national and sub-national governments, businesses and organisations working to advance the transition from unabated coal power generation to clean energy. The PPCA aims to: - secure commitments from governments and the private sector to phase out existing unabated coal power; - encourage a global moratorium on the construction of new unabated coal-fired power plants; - shift investment from coal to clean energy, including by working to restrict financing for coal-fired projects; - achieve coal phase-out in a sustainable and economically inclusive way, including appropriate support for workers and communities. Since its launch by the UK and Canadian governments at COP23 in 2017, the PPCA has been increasing its reach and influence. It currently has over 100 members who are playing a pivotal role in driving global coal phase-out efforts.

Many financial institutions have helped accelerate coal phase-out by adopting coal policies. Yet, far more can, and should, be done: many policies adopted by financial institutions are not stringent enough. Only 50 institutional policies effectively target coal expansion. ☝️Lucie Pinson, addresses this whilst in conversation with Akshat Rathi of Bloomberg. The @IEA is predicting that, for the first time, renewables will generate more electricity for the world than coal by next year. - Solar and wind alone are meeting 2/3 of the world’s new electricity demand. - Total global power sector emissions are expected to decline in 2025.
