A PLATFORM FOR WOMEN IN ANIMAL WELFARE COMMUNITIES

About us

Power of One is a non-profit organisation which supports small teams led by women predominantly in emerging markets who work in the animal welfare community, including funding transport and infrastructure projects, providing emergency funding, investment in local education and spay and neuter programmes and creating a support network for women. Animal welfare disproportionately impacts women and there are thousands of women all over the world who are fighting to improve the lives of animals, make their communities safer by reducing the spread of disease, reduce the number of animals on the street through rescue, rehabilitation, re-homing and spay and neuter campaigns, raising awareness through education in local schools and improving public perceptions of the cities, towns and countries they live in. This industry relies almost exclusively on public donations and many women risk their livelihoods and, in some cases, their lives, to be a part of it. Yet behind each of these women and their stories, lies a community that can thrive from capital investment – job creation, family support, local business support, access to education, positive public perception, mental health support and at the forefront of these industries is women. Kindness shouldn’t equate to powerlessness. Our mission is to bring that power back to these women. To recognise the importance of their work and their contribution to society and to help them build sustainable businesses in a way that benefits everyone. Across all industries there is a focus on environmental, social and governance issues – creating equality for women and platforms for women to thrive and working to improve environmental standards. The animal welfare community and everything it stands for embodies everything we should be concerned with furthering as a society and it’s right in front of our eyes. All of the foundations are already laid, all we need to do is open our eyes – choose to see and choose to change.

  • We want to share a recent rescue story from Animal Friends of Turkey AFOT - Dogs for Adoption that highlights both the challenges and the incredible impact of their work. Ollie was subjected to severe abuse and mistreatment by locals. When Animal Friends of Turkey intervened, Ollie was terrified and deeply mistrustful of everyone. However, in just a few short weeks, something amazing happened—Ollie began to form a bond with Brenda, one of their dedicated rescuers. Brenda has a special gift with dogs, and her calm, nurturing presence has helped Ollie start to trust again. Turkey is a country with many remarkable qualities, and some fortunate animals do find loving homes with families across the nation. Unfortunately, a troubling attitude among certain individuals continues to cause significant suffering for many dogs. These animals endure severe cruelty and abuse, with some being born on the streets and others abandoned to fend for themselves. They rely heavily on local charities, compassionate individuals, and even restaurants to survive each day. We are proud to support Animal Friends of Turkey and their ongoing efforts to make a difference. • In celebration of Mandela Day on July 18th, HAART - Helping All Animals in Rural Towns honoured the legacy of Nelson Mandela, who dedicated 67 years to the fight for human rights, by launching a campaign: “Winter Bucket Beds” for village dogs. ➡️ Why Winter Bucket Beds? During the harsh South African winter, village dogs often struggle to find warmth, resorting to corners of yards or rubbish piles to escape the cold. With night-time temperatures dropping to around 0 degrees, these dogs face a tough battle to survive. ➡️ The Campaign HAART initiated a small but impactful campaign aiming to provide essential comfort to vulnerable dogs. For the cost of a glass of wine or a beer, donors could contribute to the creation of special bucket beds. Each bed was personalised with the donor's name, adding a touch of warmth and care. For an additional R50 (£2 or $3), donors could also add a blanket, offering even more protection against the cold. ➡️ The Achievement HAART reached their goal of 67 Bucket Beds! This means 67 village dogs now have a warm place to sleep, thanks to the generosity of supporters. These bucket beds are life-changing, providing the much-needed warmth and comfort that can make a world of difference. Thank you for your support and for helping us honour Mandela’s legacy by making a tangible difference in the lives of South Africa’s village dogs. ➡️ Beyond the Basics Rescue shelters need so many resources beyond the most crucial parts, such as food and veterinary care. Initiatives like this one show that even small, creative fundraising efforts can have a significant impact. We hope this campaign provides inspiration for other shelters searching for ways to raise funds and support their vital work. To find out more about HAART, please follow Power of One. Together, we can all make a difference. #powerofone #Haart #fundraising #AdoptDontShop #AnimalWelfare

  • We want to share a recent rescue story from Animal Friends of Turkey AFOT - Dogs for Adoption (AFOT) that highlights both the challenges and the incredible impact of their work. One of the significant challenges they face is Parvo, a highly contagious viral illness that affects stray dogs, especially puppies. Parvo causes severe gastrointestinal distress and can be fatal if not treated promptly. Stray dogs are particularly vulnerable due to their lack of access to proper veterinary care and vaccinations. Their mission is to find these animals forever homes in the UK, relying solely on donations and the dedication of their volunteer team. Your donations play a crucial role in helping AFOT address these challenges. They provide essential medical treatment, including vaccinations and treatments for illnesses like Parvo, as well as support for their ongoing rescue and rehoming efforts. To learn more about their incredible work and how you can help, please click here: ➡️ https://shor.by/d62v Your support makes a world of difference for animals in need. • Thanks to your incredible generosity, we have been able to donate a further £1,600 to Animal Friends of Turkey (AFOT), bringing our total raised to an amazing £4,600! 🎉👏 We still have a way to go to reach our target of £9,000, and every bit of support counts. AFOT was established in May 2018 with the specific aim of rescuing dogs with little or no future in Turkey. Turkey is undoubtedly a remarkable country in many ways, and some fortunate animals do find caring homes with families throughout the nation. Unfortunately, an all-too-prevalent attitude among certain individuals persists, leading to an unacceptable level of suffering among many dogs. Some face unspeakable cruelty and abuse, many are born on the streets, while many more are merely cast out to fend for themselves. These animals rely on local charities, good Samaritans, and restaurants to survive. With your support, we aim to double the sanctuary’s capacity and provide ongoing care for an additional 25 dogs. AFOT plans to expand key areas: A new enclosure for play and socialisation. An expanded house balcony and garden area for home experience. Two large enclosures with secure cabins for individual spaces and socialisation. To find out more, please visit: https://shor.by/d62v Your support and engagement, whether through sharing stories or contributing to our cause, empower us to amplify their voices, share their stories, and raise vital funds for their essential work. Thank you for your unwavering support! 🌟 Together, we can make a difference. 🐾💕 #PowerOfOne #AnimalFriendsOfTurkey #AdoptDontShop #AnimalWelfare

  • 🌟 We're thrilled to share some exciting news with our community! 🌟 Recently, we made a donation of £800 to Pawpers In the Ruff, bringing our total contribution to £1600. Founded by Marija and Ivana in Macedonia, Pawpers In the Ruff is dedicated to rescuing dogs from dire conditions and giving them the second chance they deserve. • Meet Clare Maddock Clare’s journey with Forgotten Dogs of Turkey began five years ago when she went to Turkey for a holiday and fell in love with a cat in Kalkan. Trying to find a way to bring the cat to the UK, she connected with Claire Daulton, who introduced her to the rescue community in Turkey. Around the same time, Clare encountered a disturbing Facebook post showing a shelter in Turkey with horrendous conditions. Determined to help, she set up a Facebook group to raise awareness and gather support. In March 2020, Clare's efforts began to take shape. She discovered the immense problem of thousands of stray dogs on the streets and shelters rife with parvo and distemper. A German charity reached out to her, and with growing support, Clare began to raise funds to help the dogs. Despite facing personal challenges, including a cancer diagnosis, Clare continued her relentless work. Alongside a dedicated team, including Jacky Primrose and Donna Evans, Clare expanded their efforts, launching an online shop and organising fundraisers. Clare's tireless work has led to numerous successes. In the past four weeks alone, they have: ➡️ Rescued a neurologically damaged dog, arranging for its veterinary care and foster home. ➡️ Raised funds to help feed stray dogs in Corum, including mothers with puppies. ➡️ Collaborated with Paws and Claws and Oys Sume Davidson to help ten puppies brought to their attention by a tourist. ➡️ Arranged care and spaying for a street dog in Antalya. ➡️ Paid for the treatment of two puppies found in Nigde, now safe from danger. People often ask Clare…. Why she does it? Raising funds for dogs she will never meet? She finds joy in knowing that a poorly or injured dog has been rescued and treated. The transformation of these dogs, from their initial suffering to their recovery, brings her immense satisfaction. Clare feels fortunate to have the support of volunteers both in Turkey and the UK, enabling them to continue their vital work. If you're considering adding a furry friend to your family, please consider adopting one of the many deserving dogs from Forgotten Dogs of Turkey. By adopting, you not only give a dog a loving home but also make room for them to rescue another dog in need. Visit their adoption section and fill out a rehoming form here: https://shor.by/Lj9Z #powerofone #ForgottenDogsOfTurkey #AnimalRescue #AdoptDontShop #AnimalWelfare #SupportAnimalRescue #RehomingDogs
