It's #WorldEggDay! Did you know: 1. Eggs are good for your eyes. They contain lutein which prevents cataracts and muscle degeneration. 2. Eggs are rich in choline which promotes normal cell activity. 3. The word “yolk” derives from an Old English word for “yellow”. What will you have for dinner to celebrate? 🥚 🐔 🍽️

Following an extensive consultation with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS), the UK Feed Chain Task Force has announced the #GBRegisterofFeedMaterials is now published. The register can be accessed via https://lnkd.in/dauvH38y and will be going live on Monday 9th September. The Register consists of entries that were listed on the EU Register of Feed Materials as of 1st January 2021, and any materials notified to the GB Register from its launch in September 2022. The entries on the Register have been colour coded with the following: #Red entries have been reviewed by the UK Chain Task Force and relevant authorities and are not considered a feed material and so are #NotAuthorisedForUse. #Amber entries have been transferred from the EU Register and have not yet been reviewed. #Yellow entries have been transferred from the EU Register and are now currently under review. #Green entries have been reviewed by the UK Chain Task Force and relevant authorities and considered to be feed materials and so are authorised for use in animal feed products in GB. Entries colour coded in amber and yellow can currently be used as feed materials, but these entries may be amended or potentially removed post review. Amendments to the register will not be published and it is the responsibility of the feed business placing the goods on the market to monitor the register for any changes themselves. This regulation applies to Great Britain only; Northern Ireland continue to follow EU rules as per the Northern Ireland Protocol. The following link gives further guidance on key legislation affecting businesses involved with animal feed. Our final WPSA paper summary covers replacement of soya products. Recently, the UK announced its soya manifesto is driving towards deforestation-free and land conversion-free soya importation. As such, nutritionally, we need to find multiple replacement sources of protein (ideally locally grown) as incoming soya may become restricted due to these standards. Research like that of Jos Houdijk, Hannah Scott-Cook, and Emily Burton means we will be able to do the best job we can with these alternatives. Jos (#SRUC) started by looking at replacement of soya products for fast-growing broilers. His work looked at four dietary treatments; a standard conventional soya diet and experimental diets consisting of peas, beans, lupins, maize gluten, or potato protein plus additional amino acids to replace soya with emission and production data recorded over 35 days. Hannah’s paper (#HarperAdams) looked at replacing soybean meal with alternative protein sources in slow growing Redbro broiler diets specifically. Finally, Emily (#NTU) presented on the effect of corn fermented protein (CFP) and a commercial rapeseed/field bean blend on broiler performance while mimicking commercial environments. All 3 trials showed benefits of alternative proteins sources, be that in improving bird performance, reducing CO2 emissions, increasing EPEF, or increasing litter quality. Results confirm that poultry rations with minimal or no soya are possible. With more data, alternative protein sources are becoming increasingly plausible with the correct guidance and strategy. Your nutrition team at Premier Nutrition will remain up to date with results and how to optimise formulations. For additional information regarding these trials, please contact one of Premier’s poultry nutritionists: Alex Kemp, Ralph Bishop, Eloise Lawlor, Lottie Farrow.
