Delighted to share today’s EY UK Attractiveness Survey – Scotland 2024, with Scotland confirmed as the top UK location outside London for Foreign Direct Investment.
With 142 projects last year, our international arm Scottish Development International, based in 23 countries, is bringing some of the best companies from around the world to Scotland.
Working across the public sector, with academia and industry, our Team Scotland approach provides the support that enables companies to set up and scale across Scotland.
For the first time in six years, utility supply projects are the top category in Scotland, due to increasing levels of low-carbon and ‘cleantech’ investment.
Bringing innovative, scaling companies from around the world to work alongside dynamic and ambitious homegrown Scottish companies is helping transform our economy.

💡 This week’s SRPe project spotlight focuses on Lisa Asciak from the University of Strathclyde who is part of our National Manufacturing Institute Scotland Industry Doctorate Programme.
❤️ Lisa and supervisor Professor Christopher McCormick worked in collaboration with industry partner Terumo Aortic to develop a novel bio-compatible hydro-gel for use in fabricating 3D printed grafts for the aorta - the largest artery of the body, which carries blood from the heart to the circulatory system.
👩⚕️ Current surgical treatments for diseases or traumas of the aorta involve inserting tubular grafts that are rigid, straight-lined constructs and are a poor match for the anatomy, which can lead to complications such as restricted blood flow.
⚗ Lisa’s project has developed an alginate-based hydro-gel that closely matches the strength and elasticity of the natural tissue.
It is envisaged that, combined with the rapidly developing capabilities in 3D printing for biomedical applications, the hydrogel could be used to fabricate patient-specific grafts that will minimise some of the limitations of the current technology and lead to better patient outcomes.
