Yesterday’s verdict in the Energy Transfer v Greenpeace lawsuit is a serious setback for the fight for a fairer, cleaner energy future. Since 2017, Energy Transfer, a major fossil fuel company, has launched a relentless legal assault on Greenpeace USA for supporting Indigenous-led protests against the controversial Dakota Access Pipelines. This verdict highlights a dangerous trend: powerful entities using legal systems to intimidate and silence critics 🤐. If we want a just and accountable society, we must protect the ability to challenge wrongdoing—whether by corporations 🏢, governments 🏛️, or other powerful actors. SLAPPs (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation) have no place in democracy 🚫. They drain resources 💰, stifle debate 🛑, and undermine those working for the public interest. We stand with Greenpeace as they appeal this verdict! 💪🔊 Read more background in this statement by EarthRights International: https://lnkd.in/dB4DC3JN #Greenpeace #DakotaAccessPipelines

About us
Publish What You Pay (PWYP) is a global coalition of civil society organisations united in their call for an open and accountable extractive sector, so that oil, gas and mining revenues improve the lives of women, men and youth in resource-rich countries and that extraction is carried out in a responsible manner that benefits countries and their citizens.

📢 WEBINAR: Red Flags, Green Future: Tackling Corruption in Licensing for Transition Minerals Projects - Thursday 20th March, 2-3pm GMT / 10-11am EDT. Register here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e2DRevWK Tension and competition are heating up around the world over access to minerals, from geopolitical disputes to grassroots protest. Much of this revolves around two critical questions: who has the rights to extract these minerals, and how are they treating nearby communities and ecosystems? The licensing process sets the scene for addressing these questions, yet Natural Resource Governance Institute's latest research shows that this moment is ripe for corruption - and it's a global problem (see the map from our research below and read the full report from Aaron Sayne, Thomas Shipley, and me here: https://lnkd.in/e2vzHxMb). We'll be discussing these findings with a diverse range of actors - including Ketakandriana Rafitoson, PhD of Publish What You Pay, Stephen Barrie of Church of England Pensions Board, and Dian Patria of Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi - to understand the harm this corruption causes and the collective action needed to deliver a fairer and more responsible energy transition. Hope to see you there! Also taking this opportunity to thank the many colleagues and partners who helped make this report possible, including Matthieu Salomon, Erica Westenberg, Alexandra Malmqvist, Denis Gyeyir, Dorjdari Namkhaijantsan, Pedro Zapata Tapia, Tahiana Joëlle Ravelomanantsoa, Tamika Halwiindi, M.Sc., Sara Nicoletti, Pilar Acosta, Dr David Aled Williams, Juhani Grossmann, Clare Hammond, and Helen Taylor.

Over the last 3 years, the #EU, with input from companies and civil society, has painstakingly developed game-changing directives on Corporate Sustainability Reporting #CSRD and Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence #CSDDD, two critical pieces of legislation ensuring that EU companies do not harm people and the environment in places where they operate. The EU agreed on regulations embedding its vision for justice and rights over business’ profits. These directives are particularly important for those of us trying to hold #oil, #gas and #mining companies accountable. They would set specific rules for extractive companies - a high-risk sector that is responsible for huge harm to people and the planet. The #EU has done a u-turn! They now propose an #Omnibus legislation replacing CSRD and CSDDD, slashing all their key elements and giving companies the signal that they can do business as usual. This is a slap in the face of communities impacted by European companies, particularly people in the Global South with no means to fight back. Even several big companies argued against weakening the directives. Read here the CSO reaction to this alarming move: https://lnkd.in/dW9pmfkH At a time when the world is facing immense challenges, the EU must be a bastion of social justice, human rights and climate action. We are waiting for action, not meaningless “simplification”. The world is watching.
