Work has started on the installation of 2,000 vertical concrete columns for the foundations of Birmingham’s Curzon Street Station – marking a critical milestone in the construction of HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd’s city centre rail hub. The majority of the piles on the 100,000 square metre site will support the new station building and platforms above, with a smaller number of interlocking piles used to create the main walls of the Station basement which will house operational facilities. #railnews #railways #ukrail #rail

“A new era for our railways and a new era for Derby.” That is what Transport Secretary Louise Haigh said at a Rail Campus Derby Conference in the city on Thursday. Derby was chosen as the home of the Great British Railways (GBR) headquarters more than 12 months ago under the previous Government, a commitment honoured by Labour. “We are standing in the biggest concentration of rail innovation and expertise in Europe,” added the Transport Secretary. “Around 600 rail companies, employing 45,000 people, have chosen to co-locate in the East Midlands." #railnews #railways #ukrail #rail

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has named the Elizabeth Line – London’s new transport network – designed by Grimshaw, Maynard, Equation and AtkinsRéalis as the winner of the 2024 RIBA Stirling Prize. Presented since 1996, the prestigious annual award recognises the UK’s best new architecture. Named in honour of Queen Elizabeth II, the Elizabeth Line runs from Reading and Heathrow to Essex and South East London. Accommodating 700,000 passengers every weekday and spanning 62 miles of track and 26 miles of tunnels, it is an extraordinarily complex architectural feat masked by an elegant simplicity. #railnews #railways #ukrail #rail

Network Rail and The Green Block have launched a new initiative aimed at boosting station recycling rates to 95 per cent and diverting 100 per cent of waste from landfill. Since 2020, Network Rail has been trialling The Green Block’s patented and innovative Mobile Segregation Unit (MSU) which manually segregates waste on site into its recyclable commodities whilst capturing accurate and digital data, once rubbish from trains, public bins and retailers in stations has been collected. #railnews #railways #ukrail #rail
