Generally speaking, when it comes to repair... Working on laptops is more difficult than working on desktops Working on phones and tablets is more difficult than working on laptops We let our PURE project learners loose with a bunch of old phones and their trusty set of tools. Pretty much everyone was able to get the phones apart and remove all of the key components. Only a select few were able to successfully put the phones back together again. Practice makes perfect... Yesterday was the day our latest PURE project cohort received the machines that will be theirs - once they have repaired and upgraded them. This group got off pretty easy. We still need to replace a palm rest, a screen bezel and a few other odds and ends. However, this time there were no smashed screens to replace, no broken keys, no big issues. Thermal paste was renewed on all of the machines yesterday to ensure they perform at their best and don't overheat. We've just wrapped up our latest 6-week tech repair course. It's been incredible to witness the transformation in our learners. They're leaving us with a certificate, a toolkit, and a laptop they refurbished themselves. They're also taking away something far more valuable: the confidence and skills to tackle their own tech repairs, to help friends and family to fix and add value to their devices and for some, to pusue a career in tech repair. We're proud to help them on their journey! This course is run in partnership with the fantastic PURE project, which helps disabled and disadvantaged people get into the jobs market. Some of the items brought to us at the repair cafe, part of the Tyseley Energy Park Community Day yesterday: - Karcher battery pack from a hedge trimmer - Laptop with a broken hinge - Laptop with a WiFi fault - Dyson vaccum cleaner - needs replacement battery - Mobile phones - Leapfrog childs toy Unfortunately, some of the items were beyond feasible repair - but we were still able to either provide work arounds or other advice. Thanks to our learners who helped out on the day! Meanwhile, Maya Patel had a busy day making tote bags with students from Hallmoor School and making various clothing repairs and Neville Gunn was busy getting bikes back on the road, including a number of kids bikes. This past week our PURE project students worked on disassembling mobile phones. A tricky and fiddly job compared with working on laptops or desktops. Lots of tiny screws and delicate connectors to deal with. A quick Google search suggests that The UK discards around 25 million mobile phones each year. This doesn’t include the phones that around 30 million people in the UK keep lying around in drawers and cupboards that they don’t use because they’ve replaced them with a new model. You would have thought then that we at ReCognition Circular CIC would be swimming in 2nd hand phones. The fact is that we have precious few of them. Without a fresh supply of new devices, we won’t be able to teach future students how to repair smartphones. Can you help us?
