We are in the final week of Wincanton’s fifth W² Innovation Lab programme! Welcome back to our Startup Spotlight Series with our final startup on the programme, Returnal. Returnal’s white-label Trade-in solution makes it easy for customers to get value from products they no longer use and easy for retailers to maximise the lifetime value of customers. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐧?  Our solution(s) will allow Wincanton to stand out in a crowded market by providing layers of service that will support existing clients, and attract new clients, in a rapidly evolving retail landscape. As the dynamic between retailer and consumer shifts due to economic and environmental pressures, alongside the increasing rate of technological change, these solutions will allow forward-thinking retailers to choose Wincanton. Integrating these solutions shines a light on Wincanton as a partner that not only understands but facilitates their client’s evolution to align with their consumer's needs and desires, and grabs market share for Wincanton and their clients. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬?  Ingenuity meets timing. 𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐧𝐨𝐰, 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧?  In 2 years, our product will be the new industry standard and will provide the behavioural data that will cause ripple effects back up through the supply chain as we learn and understand at scale about usage and the power of community when it comes to how people interact with retailers, products & product life cycles. Those who act now will be the big winners. #Innovations #Accelerators #Startups

We’ve always found it amazing that eBay has been hiding in plain sight. They facilitate sales of millions of products from big retailers, benefitting from brands strong identity and astronomical budgets, all while harvesting the insights the data offers around consumer behaviours, product lifecycles and more. The retailers are left with only the first sale of a product that might change hands 5+ times and potentially a ‘single use’ customer. IKEA has the capacity and resource to deliver this and many will look on enviously and will be weighing up how to win back their own secondary markets. There is great power in bringing together responsible procurement and greater understanding of consumer behaviours after the initial purchase. When the customer acquisition cost is high - you have to keep the customer retention cost down. Buy-back and peer-to-peer are the most effective strategies to do just that.

Chief Client Officer - Helping make business a force for good

IKEA launched the pilot of its pre-owned market place last week. The business has created a peer to peer platform in Madrid and Oslo to take on eBay and FaceBook Marketplace. It's a massive move from IKEA and part of a bigger sustainability ambition to transition to a circular business by 2030. A couple of thoughts on the launch: 1. Commercial case - It was significant that Jesper Brodin gave his first interview about the launch to the Financial Times. This is a commercial innovation, not a PR move. 2. Insight led - This solution has been driven by data, both about the growth of peer to peer and second hand retail and the volume of IKEA product being traded on platforms where Ikea doesn't get a cut of the resale opportunity. It's an innovation that starts in the right place. 3. Short timelines - The pilot has been given relatively short timelines to prove the concept and deliver insights to enable scale. It will need an aggressive marketing strategy to give it the best chance of cutting through. 4. Removing frictions - The next few months will be so exciting for the IKEA team behind the innovation. They will be working hard to look at the behaviours around the proposition, analyse data and optimise the experience. The goal should be to create something as SIMPLE to use for buyers and sellers as possible. 5. A new role for the Brand - Although Preowned sounds simple and logical, this move is highly complex and will require sophisticated tech as well as a leap of faith from IKEA that it's brand can play the right role in the more nuanced world of peer to peer retail. It's going to be fascinating to see how this works out. Let's hope it's a huge success for IKEA and provides a new agenda for other businesses to follow when it comes to embedding sustainability; making big, commercial, customer oriented moves to transform the business and not tinkering around the edges. #purposedrivenbusiness #businessinnovation #sustainability #çustomerexperience https://lnkd.in/expWkhV9

Luke's never been a wallflower, but here he is in front of a wallflower. Great day at Wincanton Chippenham and huge thanks to our Focus Group participants! We got some exceptional feedback - 55% of the groups we engaged with placed Returnal ahead of global heavyweights eBay and Facebook Marketplace as their favoured method to recover value from products they no longer use! 85% would recommend Returnal to a friend. With an average voucher of £20, participants indicated an average spend of £48.89 on their next visit to participating retailers. An overwhelming response to a solution that can transform customer perception and increase revenue whilst accelerating your brands journey towards Net Zero. We're flying, and this is just the start! Big thanks to Mel Gunes for quote of the day... "I need this now!" You're not the only one Mel - there's a lot of brands who feel the same! Thanks also to Claire Charlton, Sharon Hall, & Tracey Clifford for organising and Kassie Biggemann for supporting, organising, and cakes!

💡 I've decided to kick off a series of casual spotlight write-ups on some of the more interesting and innovative ventures and founders I've met while at MOHARA. ⚒ The complex, real-world problems these founders are tackling through ingenious solutions are truly impressive, and more importantly, really inspiring in my mind, so why not bring them to light? 🔈 I hope this not only raises awareness for them but also inspires others who are in the process of ideating or scaling their own innovative solutions to complex, real-world problems. First-up, Returnal and founders jake margiotta and Luke Davies 🍃

"It's not the man the knows the most that has the most to say" 🤫 my Grandma used to tell me. It always made me feel better as a quiet child so I quite liked it. Now I don't suffer from being shy, but we haven't been too noisy here recently and it felt an appropriate way to suggest that's because we've been busy boys. A week of big wins here at Returnal We can't say much more than that right now but keep your eyes peeled as we will be sharing more details in the weeks to come and for now we wish you all a successful week in whatever it is you are doing. (as long as it's nice and not horrid). In other news we were described as "the worst dressed entrepreneurs" this week which we wilfully accepted - and we will showcase that in our next podcast coming back to air shortly. Plus we buy all our clothes from charity shops so we're immune from criticism. Tell us about your best charity bargain to keep us entertained and energised while we are beavering away here! 👘 🎩 👢 👜
