We’ve seen mentors registering from across regions and nations, from the public and private sector, in the UK and internationally. We’re thrilled to see such a robust response to President Helen Fadipe’s call for collaboration, investment and inclusivity in this important way. That's a wrap on the very first Planner podcast, recorded this morning in the heart of London's Soho. We had a great chat with Robbie Calvert MRTPI from the Royal Town Planning Institute about the Planning and Infrastructure Bill, plenty of conversation about the purpose of planning and a tour of highlights from the latest issue of the Planner. PlannerPod episode 1 will drop some time in the next couple of weeks - we'll let you know when it's ready. In the meantime, big thanks to Viral Tribe for hosting us at their Soho studio and for making it such an easy experience. • The RTPI has emphasised that while the Government's #SpringStatement rightly places planning at the centre of its economic agenda, achieving housing targets will require more than just planning reform. Robbie Calvert, the RTPI’s Head of Policy and Public Affairs said: “Planning reforms are at the heart of the Government’s growth plan. "The acknowledgement from the Office for Budget Responsibility that planning will be central to increasing the UK’s economic activity over the coming years is encouraging. “But, while reforms are important, more could be unlocked by investing in planning itself. Our research has found that planning reform and increased housing development could miss out on over £70 billion in additional value by not investing in planning. "We won't achieve the economic growth this country desperately needs if we don't significantly invest in the planning system. “Beyond this forecast, there will be additional ambitions for planning services resulting from the implementation of the Affordable Housing Programme, the Planning and Infrastructure Bill and local government reform. “Planning consents can't do this alone, we need to ensure that the entire construction industry is geared up to deliver on this scale.” #PlanningReform #EconomicGrowth

  • Charles Goode's Early Career Research Grant project documented changes in young adults’ attitudes to car dependency and the implications for planning. "Many interviewees highlighted the need for stronger collaboration between government bodies, local authorities, transport companies and housebuilders to improve the quality and timing of public transport infrastructure alongside new housing development." • Planning Aid England volunteer Claire Walters highlights the challenges and opportunities of working with less-represented groups in the Central Lancashire Local Plan process. Her takeaways: Hold culturally sensitive in-person events in accessible venues Carefully consider language for those whose first language is not English Document all issues even when they are not planning-related, so they can be integrated with other services and decision-making processes. • The government’s recent Planning and Infrastructure Bill recognises that our national prospects rest heavily on our ability to get Britain building better. But our planning system is chronically under-resourced. That’s where the Planning Skills Fund comes in. Managed by the British Chambers of Commerce, backed by Aviva and delivered by the RTPI, this is a new partnership between government and industry to solve this challenge. A donation of just £15,000 can fund one planner’s training. And with an efficient public planning system, we could unlock £50 billion in value to the UK. By investing in planning skills today, we're making a down payment on Britain's future prosperity – laying the groundwork for the infrastructure revolution our economy needs. Contact bccplanningskillsfund@britishchambers.org.uk to learn more, arrange a meeting, or pledge your support. #PlanningSkillsFund #Infrastructure #Planning #Business #SkillsGap
