This week, we are putting the limelight on mental health and well being, and how fundamental it is in order to achieve a safe and healthy workplace and support business performance. Our guest is the inspiring Sukhy Hogwood CFIOSH, former head of HSEW Europe, People and Places Solutions at Jacobs; and recently appointed SHEQ Director at Network Rail. There are many insights throughout this really relaxed conversations; here are three key ideas/insights that particularly resonated with us- ▫️ Safety by design - a hearts and minds initiative that aims to consider HSEW right from the design stage and how planning it well from the outset could have a huge positive impact on people and the organisation ▫️ Understanding how mental health and well being are intrinsically linked to safety in the modern workplace ▫️ and the evolving safety landscape, the impact of leadership engagement on safety culture, and the need to be authentic, credible and with integrity Don’t miss this conversation. This week, we had the pleasure of speaking with Rodrigo Gomes, PhD, VP OSH Risk Governance and Assurance at TK Elevator, who shared some insights into safety and its evolving landscape, and the transformative power of effective safety management and leadership. With over 20 years working for TK elevator across many functions, he comes with the unique perspective of a decentralised workplace, tackling the challenges of a scattered operational environment  and how important it is to empower workers to take decisive actions for their safety. One thing that really stood out was Rodrigo's emphasis on "felt leadership", and all that it encapsulates. ▷ Engagement and trust building genuine trust across every level is fundamental ▷ Simplicity in process Ensuring processes are straightforward and easy to understand at all levels in the organisation ▷ Visible and consistent leadership Demonstrating integrity through consistent actions and words Rodrigo’s knowledgeable perspective, anchored in years of experience and strong academic research background, is invaluable in driving forward a culture of safety and productivity. This week Remy D.J. Wierenga, Group Safety director at Refresco joins us for a fascinating conversation, challenging us to reflect and embrace human fallibility, the advent of AI and robotics in the industry space, and how it could all come together beautifully thanks to the pivotal role HSE experts have in nurturing a culture of growth and adaptation amidst these dynamic changes. Here are some of our favourite themes - - Understanding the complexities of human error and how to accommodate it - the profession's core lies not in managing risks but in managing controls. - Envisioning the disruptive influence of AI and robotics on industrial landscapes; and how the combination of tech consistency to the creative, adaptive nature of Humans can be powerful. - Recognising the evolving role of HSE experts as catalysts for organisational learning and adaptation, beyond mere compliance. Join us as Remy argues for a future where safety is not just about preventing failure but accommodating the human element within a well-designed system of controls. It's a must-listen. This week, we welcome a very special guest and friend, Graeme Lannigan, Global HSSE learning manager at bp; And you are in for a great chat on the importance of a committed and intentional leadership, the safety learning [r]evolution, and the emotional impact of effective training, and more. Graeme shares his incredible formative journey from a 16-yo apprentice seafarer to leading global safety programs, his passion for mentoring, and insights into the evolving world of safety training. Here are 3 key takeaways you won't want to miss - “There is no learning without action” or the necessary evolution of safety learning from one-dimensional disconnected classroom or powerpoint options, to more engaging & immersive solutions; workers expect more and rightfully so. - Technology (or “format”)  is only as powerful as the design and purpose of the training itself; it’s not the fix but rather the enabler. - The power of passion for people and safety, driving change and making a tangible difference; it often starts with simply knowing their names. Senior EHS Manager EMEA at Adient. Passionate Environmental, Health and Safety Leader. Interdependent EHS Culture Lead - Transformational Leader - Leading with Purpose. DEI Champion.

How often do you reflect on all the safety measures running in the background to keep your workplace safe? The Safety Heroes Podcast has given me the opportunity to share my perspective on what a culture of care should look like and how we embrace this at Adient. Among other aspects, I highlight: 👷🏽♀️👷🏽♂️ Safety as a cross-functional teamwork: As an EHS professional, I strive to engage the whole organization around a culture of care. This means that everyone feels accountable for their actions and brings in their contributions to safety day by day. Therefore, we need to equip people with the right processes so that they can make the right decisions with confidence. 🦺 A leadership mindset: Nowadays, companies are looking beyond legal requirements to ensure employees’ safety. I would like to highlight that EHS is a multi-discipline area – therefore I recommend colleagues in the field to harness the power of continuous learning, both in hard and soft skills. Because our purpose is not only to convey technical content in an understandable manner, it is also about reaching people. 📚 Last but not least: Sharing is caring. Share what you have learned with your community inside and outside your organization. Because safety goes beyond the workplace and in the end, benefits society.
