Markes' Applications Specialist Lucy Hearn gave a presentation on high-capacity sorptive extraction (HiSorb) yesterday, at the 3rd European Sample Preparation Conference in Chania, Crete. Lucy discussed how this automated technique enables fast, high sensitivity analysis of chlorophenols and other common odorants in drinking water. 👨🍳 If PFAS-coated materials have been used during the preparation, cooking, packing or storage of foodstuffs, the PFAS can migrate into the food itself. Did you know? You can use a focusing trap to improve SPME and SPME-Arrow workflows? In the laboratory this month we are comparing traditional SPME-Arrow (direct to GC injection) with SPME-Arrow pre-concentrated on a multi-bed sorbent trap using the Markes International Centri. Note the top cover in image 3 was purposefully removed to highlight the trap located next to the Centri injection inlet. Are imitation perfumes as good as the real thing? It’s a tricky question, but one that cutting-edge science is helping to answer. Yesterday, researchers from University of Warwick discussed this on BBC’s Morning Live. Covington James (Prof. James Covington) shared insights on how his team employed Markes International's Centri with GC-BenchTOF and ChromCompare+ software from SepSolve to analyse and compare the fragrance profiles of luxury brand perfumes with imitation products. While these ‘dupes’ could deceive a human sensory panel, the GC–TOF MS revealed subtle differences in their chemical compositions. 📖 Want to find out more? Our field application specialist, Jonathan Grandy, presented at the Symposium on Multidimensional GC at ACS in Denver this morning, focusing on how effective GC×GC–TOF MS is for detailed characterisation of pyrolysis oils. Unfortunately, the unknown chemical composition and extreme complexity of pyrolysis oils means that their analysis using conventional 1D GC–MS is challenging.
