School for Social Entrepreneurs

Non-profit Organizations

We help 1,000 people a year develop the skills, strengths and networks they need to tackle society’s biggest problems.

About us

We can’t fix issues like poverty, climate change and ill-health alone. That’s why the School for Social Entrepreneurs exists. We help 1,000 people a year develop the skills, strengths and networks they need to tackle society’s biggest problems. We run courses that equip people to start, scale and strengthen organisations that make a positive difference. But we’re not a traditional school. Learning with SSE is inspiring, action-based and accessible. We support in others ways too, such as funding and mentoring. Lord Michael Young founded SSE in 1997, and we’ve grown to a network of schools across the UK, Canada and India. Together, we’re changing lives and transforming communities.

  • The theme of this year’s Black History Month is Reclaiming Narratives. We are hosting two webinars to share the experiences of our black friends, colleagues and partners working in the third sector. 📅 Our first session, “Women Leading Change”, will delve into the common challenges faced by black women in business, particularly those in leadership roles. Black women social entrepreneurs are at the forefront of creating social impact, driving innovation, and empowering their communities. We’ll hear from Edith Iheama – Founder of Vanclaron CIC , Victoria Ijeh-Allen – Founder and CEO of Iconic Steps, Lucy Hamlin – Director of Spring Into Action CIC . 📅 The next event, "Overcoming Barriers and Building Sustainable Businesses", will address barriers faced specifically by black social entrepreneurs. We know from our data that black led organisations often out-perform their white counterparts during the start-up stage, only to suffer at trade up or scale up stages. Leading the conversation will be Robin Morgan-Chu, director of partnerships and policy at the School for Social Entrepreneurs and Kunle Olulode MBE, FRSA, RSM, CEO of Voice4Change England. Don’t miss out! Register now ➡ https://lnkd.in/e-67Acqf

📣 LONDON OFFICE SPACE AVAILABLE FOR SOCIAL ENTERPRISE TENANTS 📣 Last year, Social Enterprise UK and the School for Social Entrepreneurs set up a new home in central London – and we’re now looking to share our collaborative office space with other like-minded organisations. We have almost 3,000 square feet on offer over two floors, with lots of natural light and retained character features from the building’s former life as an East End warehouse. Our location on Dock Street is a lively commercial area close to several train, tube and overground stations. Space is available to social enterprises looking for a home from 18 September, with rent negotiable for shared or full occupation priced at a competitive market rate. Please contact Andrew.croft@socialenterprise.org.uk to find out more.

  • A wrap for us from Labour Conference! Brilliant to hear the government discuss the growth of the economy, reforming our public services and tackling society’s biggest issues will need a country of service and social entrepreneurs are at the heart of this. A particular line from class of 2024 MP Polly Billington stuck out: “To transform a failed market into a thriving community - we need social entrepreneurs. They are the problem solvers in their area”. We couldn’t agree more. It was brilliant to see a united sector championing a mission-led government to get behind mission-led businesses with events from Social Enterprise UK Power to Change Cooperatives UK and many others. Also, alongside our co-hosts Pathway Fund, Access - The Foundation for Social Investment, Better Society Capital and Social Investment Business we ran a reception bringing together social leaders, policymakers and politicians. During this, Civil Society Minister Stephanie Peacock brought home “the social sector has so much to offer government and we can work closer together”. We’re here and we’re looking forward to playing our part. As Alastair Wilson our very own CEO said: “The UK used to be world-leading on social enterprise. As a united sector that encourages sustainability and impact we will get back there again!”
