School-Home Support gets children back into school, ready to learn, whatever it takes.

About us

School-Home Support is a charity working with children and families in England to maximise educational opportunities and improve life chances. Partnering with schools, local authorities and families, we look beyond the classroom to understand and tackle the issues affecting children’s learning, such as housing, poverty and mental ill health. Since 1984, we have used early intervention to break intergenerational cycles of deprivation and low aspiration, replacing them with children in school and ready to learn.

With many children now back to school and a full week ahead, it’s important to remember that not all families find this transition easy. School-Home Support, a charity dedicated to improving school attendance, received a £10,000 donation from Wesleyan Foundation to run a programme in Liverpool, helping children get back into the classroom. Wesleyan’s Community & Citizenship Manager, Jacob Ayre, recently visited the programme and saw first-hand the positive impact it's having on children and families. From helping resolve housing issues to providing mental health support, School-Home Support is making a real difference. Read more about this incredible initiative and how Wesleyan Foundation is supporting children and families in our latest update below. #WesleyanFoundation #SchoolSupport #BackToSchool

Yesterday, we attended the presentation of the latest IPPR report on school exclusions across England, and the numbers are truly shocking. 32 million days of learning were lost to suspensions and unauthorised absences in the 2022/23 school year. https://lnkd.in/dXE8DwVH It was great hearing from speakers like Pepe DiIasio, Chair of the Who Is Losing Learning Solutions Council, and Florence Kroll, Director of Children’s Services in Greenwich. Their insights into tailored, bespoke approaches and bridging the gap between schools and families were particularly inspiring. At School-Home Support, we strongly believe that radical collaboration between all stakeholders is essential. We fully support a whole family approach, with early help interventions that are bespoke to each child’s unique needs. This is how we can make sure every child is in school, ready to learn and has the opportunity to thrive in education. #EducationForAll #WholeFamilySupport

This #GCSEResultsDay we want to celebrate all of the young people who have worked so hard to reach this important milestone. 📝👏 A special shout out to the families, young people and School-Home Support Practitioners who worked together this year to improve attendance and engagement at school. We know attendance is closely linked to attainment, and that when children are able to access the support they need to thrive in school, they can reach their full potential. Congratulations! 💚

Congratulations to all of the young people who have received their A Level results today. 👏 Exam results are just a snapshot of a young person’s talents and capabilities, but today is an important milestone and a moment to celebrate the dedication and perseverance it takes to get here. A special shout out to the young people, families and School-Home Support practitioners who worked together this year. When young people are safe and happy at school, able to access the support they need, they can flourish personally and academically. 💚 #ALevelResultsDay

We wrote to the new housing ministers Angela Rayner and Matthew Pennycook to highlight the impact of insecure housing on school attendance, and share our route map for addressing the attendance crisis. For the children and young people our practitioners worked with in 2022/23, one in five identified ‘where you live’ as one of the biggest challenges they face. Our route map recommends that attendance is included in strategies to tackle poor housing, and that a review is conducted into the negative impacts of poor housing on school attendance. We would like to say a huge thank you to our amazing partners CIBC for organising a fun filled scavenger hunt!   CIBC employees teamed up to take part in the scavenger hunt, before hosting a brilliant raffle and auction with all funds raised going to support their three charity partners - School-Home Support, SkyWay Charity & Lennox Children's Cancer Fund. It was a memorable evening and great to be a part of it - despite the charity team not claiming first place!    We are so grateful to CIBC for organising these engaging events for their employees. We love showing up and taking part in these events and judging by the brilliant turn out, so do CIBC's supportive employees.    Hear more from our fantastic auction host for the evening, and CIBC employee, Sam Bentwood:

✍ We wrote to the new Work & Pensions ministers Liz Kendall, Sir Stephen Timms and Alison McGovern to highlight the impact of poverty on school attendance and share our route map for addressing the attendance crisis. Our practitioners work with families to address the underlying causes of absence, and so often see how poverty is a key barrier to securing good school attendance and engagement. We welcome the establishment of the Child Poverty Unit to tackle the wide-ranging causes of child poverty. In our route map for the new Government we call for school attendance to be included in strategies to tackle child poverty, to break down a huge barrier to education for many children. It is great to see Jacqui Smith recognising the impact that inadequate access to support can have on school attendance, and the link between low attendance and poor mental health, in yesterday's House of Lords debate on Mental Health and Poor Attendance. For children that our whole family support practitioners work with, 'feelings and behaviour' is the largest area of need. While we welcome the Government's commitment to providing mental health professionals for every school, in our route map we are also calling for a commitment to fund a whole family support practitioner for every school. Whole family support practitioners work with the whole family to understand and address the barriers to good school attendance. Underlying issues, such as having a secure home and enough food to eat, need to be addressed to help build up a child's wellbeing. Read our full route map here: https://lnkd.in/eMrvybJg
