Revolutionising screed production with emission-free concrete recycling! At Screed Works Ltd, we are always on the lookout for ground-breaking advances that can improve our processes and contribute to a sustainable future. Recently, scientists at Cambridge University Press & Assessment unveiled a revolutionary method of recycling concrete through the steel recycling process, which they described as an "absolute miracle” This innovation is of great interest not only to the general construction sector, but also to specialised areas such as screed production. Concrete and cement are responsible for a staggering 7% of global CO2 emissions. The new method, developed by Cambridge University’s Faculty of Engineering, involves reactivating old concrete at high temperatures in an electric arc furnace, traditionally used for steel recycling. This process replaces the lime with used cement, reducing impurities and overall emissions. Remarkably, this method can produce emission-free cement when fuelled by renewable energy sources. By using zero-emission cement in our screed mixes, we can significantly reduce our CO2 emissions and meet global sustainability targets. The use of recycled concrete means less dependence on raw materials and promotes a circular economy in the construction sector. This innovation can be crucial in our efforts to reduce waste and promote recycling. The reactivated cement produced in this process has a higher iron oxide content, which surprisingly has little to no impact on performance. High-End Residential Screed, Kensington, London A comprehensive refurbishment and extension project was carried out in the prestigious London borough of Kensington. This five-storey private residence, known for its architectural significance, was remodelled to improve its functionality and aesthetics. Forcia Limited, a long-standing client, commissioned Screed Works Ltd to supply the screed package required to make the refurbishment a success. The densely built-up residential area presented significant logistical challenges for the works, including the removal of car parking spaces for the delivery of materials and access to machinery. Screed Works Ltd and Forcia Limited carefully planned the delivery of materials and access to machinery, overcoming the constraints imposed by the location of the site. The project involved intricate screed work in the basement, ground and first floors, utilising specialist materials and techniques with a high degree of precision to meet the specific thickness and material composition requirements in the different areas of the building. The screed in the basement was a 4-day quick-dry sand-cement screed, reinforced with D49 grids to support the new basement structure. The ground floor screed was constructed using Weberfloors 4310 self levelling fibre screed to achieve the limited depths. "The collaboration between Screed Works and Forcia skilfully managed the complexity of the project, particularly the structural works in a groundwater zone, and demonstrated efficient management and technical expertise. This partnership not only overcame significant technical and logistical hurdles, but also emphasised sustainability, underlined by Forcia's use of 100% recycled steel for the temporary works. This commitment to environmentally responsible construction practises was complemented by Screed Works' technical expertise and careful planning, resulting in the successful delivery of a screed package that met the stringent requirements. Together we transformed a high profile renovation into a modern, functional and sustainable family home that is a harmonious blend of craftsmanship, environmental awareness and excellent collaboration."
