Stacey Rothwell getting some flowers for innovation with an evidence-base. You love to see it. Seriously, it's terrific that Stacey is getting this kudos. The coverage is a credit to her and a demonstration of the power that good evaluation of innovative ideas can have. 👏 💐
🔴 The screen shows a woman using her phone to give a tour of her hallway and living room, panning the camera around to show the fist-sized holes in furniture and walls where her husband’s punches landed. The police officer on the other end of the call takes screen grabs to gather evidence of the violence, while asking for information on the welfare of the young children whose brightly coloured toys can be seen scattered throughout the family home. Another woman shows an officer a bite mark left by her upper arm, where the black and purple bruising is again screen-shotted for proof of the injury. They are distressing scenes, but just a handful of more than 6,000 domestic abuse calls handled by Kent Police to date are using new “Rapid Video Response” technology (RVR), which is now being rolled out across Britain and sparking the interest of countries including the US, Canada, Australia, France and India. The service is the brainchild of Stacey Rothwell, who joined the force as a constable in 1998, and is now in charge of technological innovation for policing across East of England. Could this be the most evidence based speech ever made by a politician? Incredible....... See the full speech here from Australian Andrew Leigh MP here: https://lnkd.in/gecHPCaS Yes it reflects only a part of EBP, the randomised control trial - but it is exceptional

Great article from Tim Harford https://lnkd.in/eMh6uRV6 highlighting the benefit of systematic reviews and how the Cochrane collaboration for medicine was followed by the Campbell collaboration for social sciences like policing https://lnkd.in/eNjGEm7u Good quote from it…. Eleanor Chelimsky. In 1994, she explained, “I hoped that synthesis could dramatise, for our legislative users, not only what was, in fact, known, but also what was not known.” Dramatising our ignorance is one of the most valuable things an evidence review can do…

Evidence-based policing is coming, whether you want it or not. So here's my three-page pitch for police departments to develop police scientists within their ranks, or find willing partners for the role. Why in house talent and not (most) criminologists? Because as I write... "Many academics have been trained in a tradition of researching on the police, not with or for the police." So develop your in-house talent with the help of folk at say The American Society of Evidence-Based Policing, Society of Evidence Based Policing (SEBP), ANZ SEBP - Australia and New Zealand Society of Evidence Based Policing , SEBP-NL (Society of Evidence-Based Policing Nederland) or The Canadian Society of Evidence-Based Policing. This is from a fantastic new publication headed up by Nazmia E.A. Comrie and colleagues at the U.S. Department of Justice COPS Office. Full publication here: https://lnkd.in/ee6W_5vK Check out the other great articles. It is full of short, pithy, insightful wisdom from a range of stellar authors, including Maureen Q. McGough, Jim Bueermann, Tamara Herold, Rachel Santos, Darrel Stephens, Ganesha Martin, Gina V. Hawkins, Terry Cherry, Robin Engel, Ph.D., Nola Joyce, Michael Scott and others!
