It's #SickleCell Awareness Month, so we wanted to share some facts with you that you may not know... 🩸 Anthony Okereke , the leader of the council was born with sickle cell and since 2016 he sits for four hours every six weeks to have his blood exchanged. He needs 72 people to donate every year for him alone.🤯 🩸Sickle cell changes your red blood cells, causing them to be stiff, impacting the flow of oxygen causing pain. 🩸Almost 300 babies are born in the UK with sickle cell each year. 🩸Over 200 donations are needed every day to support people with the disease, and new figures have revealed that demand for blood to treat sickle cell patients has gone up by more than 50 percent since 2016. In collaboration with NHS Blood and Transplant and Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust we were able to follow Anthony along to one of his transfusions. As this year's Cycle to Work Day draws to a close, we invited Matthew Cooper DipCIPR, from King's College Hospital, to tell us about his experience with the Cycle to Work scheme. 🚲 Providing the facilities and resources for staff to cycle to work is part of our three-year Green Plan to deliver more sustainable health and care across south east London. The Health & Care Jobs Hub team were delighted yesterday to join with our brilliant hosts and partners Southwark College to celebrate the success of our SWAP employability scheme graduates – many of whom are now in secure NHS jobs. South London Listens is a collaboration of thousands of people, and a wide range of organisations, to address challenges that affect the health and wellbeing of people in south London — and to bring about real change. They have just published their South London Listens Impact report 2021-23 and plan of action 24-25. Alongside this key report is a new film, showcasing the people, stories, and impacts of their work so far, South London Listens.

A new primary care employability programme, piloted by the SEL Jobs Hub and Southwark College, has seen very promising results. Over half of the cohort has secured a local role in primary care — congratulations to everyone involved! NCG
