It's #SickleCell Awareness Month, so we wanted to share some facts with you that you may not know... 🩸 Anthony Okereke , the leader of the council was born with sickle cell and since 2016 he sits for four hours every six weeks to have his blood exchanged. He needs 72 people to donate every year for him alone.🤯 🩸Sickle cell changes your red blood cells, causing them to be stiff, impacting the flow of oxygen causing pain. 🩸Almost 300 babies are born in the UK with sickle cell each year. 🩸Over 200 donations are needed every day to support people with the disease, and new figures have revealed that demand for blood to treat sickle cell patients has gone up by more than 50 percent since 2016. In collaboration with NHS Blood and Transplant and Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust we were able to follow Anthony along to one of his transfusions.
