What a wonderful evening last Thursday celebrating the Sheffield Design Awards! A massive congratulations to all the winners (which you can read about here: https://lnkd.in/e4UMhNGP), especially Heart of the City 2 which won for Outstanding Project of the Year👏🏿! It was truly inspiring to see the positive impact this project has had on the city and its people. Vote now for People’s Choice prize in 2024 Sheffield Design Awards! This week, a panel of architecture experts will be travelling around South Yorkshire to visit shortlisted entries in the 2024 Sheffield Design Awards. The public will be able to vote for their favourite in the People’s Choice Award poll, which opens today. The shortlist for the Sheffield Design Awards 2024, in association with Square Kitchens & Bathrooms Limited, is now out. The Awards celebrate the best in design in the built environment across Sheffield and South Yorkshire. Explore the incredible projects that made the cut this year at the Sheffield Design Awards website and vote now for the People’s Choice Award from among all the shortlisted entries. The entry with the most votes will receive the coveted ‘People’s Choice Award’ at a glittering Awards Ceremony at Sheffield’s Millennium Gallery in November. The shortlisted entries this year include creative home extensions, sensitive heritage renovations, welcoming public spaces, and state of the art commercial buildings. The judges will visit locations with views of the rolling South Yorkshire countryside, large scale regeneration in Rotherham, and urban settings in Sheffield’s Heart of the City. This week, our panel of national expert judges will be visiting each of the shortlisted properties and selecting the winners in eight different categories. Head judge Nicola Rutt said “The standard of entries this year has been incredibly high. I can’t wait to visit the shortlisted projects.” The People’s Choice poll opens on Tue 1 October and closes on 31st October. Our final category in this year’s awards is the Open Space category.    This will be awarded to a project that demonstrates an outstanding contribution to the public spaces in South Yorkshire’s towns and cities. It may include graffiti art, pub/shop frontages, hard and soft landscaping schemes, and planting schemes.   Here we see ‘Grey to Green’ by Nigel Dunnett and Sheffield City Council - Winner of the 2016 Open Space Award and Outstanding Project of the Year. The scheme brought colour and sustainability to inner-city Sheffield, offering a calm refuge in an urban environment. Grey to Green transformed a tarmacked area into a green public space that encourages cycling and walking. 'Practice of the Year' - New in 2024 A new category for this year’s awards is the ‘Practice of the Year’, given to an architectural, landscape or design practice that demonstrates exceptional design work over the eligibility period. The winner is chosen from all this year's entries to the awards, with an emphasis on multiple projects completed by the same practice. The second of the Residential Awards this year is for Multiple Dwellings. It is sponsored by IG Masonry Support. Judges are looking for excellence in the design of a development containing more than one dwelling and should consider place, space, and sustainability as well as aesthetic merits. We look back at brutalist favourite Park Hill flats (Phase 2) by Mikhail Riches for Urban Splash - winner of the Housing Award and the Conservation Award at the 2022 Awards. Phase 2 included the refurbishment of 195 homes plus commercial space within the Grade 2* listed brutalist housing scheme. The architects’ approach was to retain as much of the existing fabric as possible, and learn lessons from the Phase 1 development. The overall result was a high-quality refurbishment which preserves and enhances the original architecture. With 4 weeks to go until the deadline for this year’s entries, we take a look at the Conservation Award.   This is awarded to the project that best respects and enhances the original building/setting. Judges are looking for adaptive re-use of historic buildings, refurbishment and regeneration. Projects may also demonstrate an understanding of the vernacular traditions and materials of their locality. The Long Barn by Chiles Evans + Care Architects was Winner of the 2018 Conservation Award. Far from your average barn conversion, The Long Barn forms part of a wider cohousing vision committed to the restoration and reuse of a model estate farm from the early 19th century.   The judges felt the architect created a "sensitive, yet self-assured, intervention into an existing listed structure.
