HLM Architects Celebrates 60 Years of Thoughtful Design This year marks a significant milestone for HLM Architects as we celebrate 60 years of practice. Since our founding in 1964, we have built a strong reputation for design excellence and expertise, solving our client’s challenges while considering the broader impact design can have on people, communities, and society. Our journey over the last six decades has been fascinating and remarkable in many ways and we take immense pride in our rich heritage. Looking forward, we intend to build on our legacy of innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability; and as we celebrate our successes, we remain dedicated to evolving our practice to meet the ever-changing needs of the communities we serve. To celebrate, we’ve created a new film celebrating our journey over the last 60 years! A big thanks to our Sheffield Studio Director Delia Harmston for narrating. Here’s to 60 more years of creating spaces that inspire and transform people’s lives. Read more here: https://brnw.ch/21wNno0 #HLM60 #60yearsofthoughtfuldesign #CelebratingArchitecture

Architecture and Planning
Sustainable Architecture, Interiors, Landscapes and Masterplanning practice with a Thoughtful Design ethos at its heart
About us
We are an Employee-Owned architectural practice with a proud 59-year history of producing places and spaces that improve people’s lives. With a design philosophy that puts people at its centre, it is our mission to delight clients and users, making memorable places which evoke positive emotional responses. We strive to create buildings that respond to their context and climate, as well as our client’s budget, and we consequently don’t have a ‘signature-style’. Every design evolves as a solution to a unique set of challenges that we approach with ‘signature-thinking’ – this is a creative, thoughtful, and fun process that allows the character and ideas of each project to flourish in their own delightful way - we call this ‘Thoughtful Design’. We have received broad and far-reaching accolades for our designs, including: ◽️ Building Magazine's Architectural Practice of the Year 2023 ◽️ BCIA Digital Initiative of the Year 2023 ◽️ Winner of two Structural Timber awards 2023 ◽️ Offsite Awards Architect of the Year and Winner of Winners 2023 ◽️ Triple winner at Glasgow Institute of Architects awards 2023 Our true reward is knowing that we can improve wellbeing - not only in our design approach, but inside and outside of the business too. We pride ourselves on a diverse workforce and inclusive culture, promoted at board level by our Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Group and enhanced by our connect day activities. Reflective of our culture, we received the AJ100 Employer of the Year Award 2020 and 2021, and are recognized as a three-star accredited, ‘world-class’ Best Company Employer. We are passionate about improving social mobility, opening new avenues into the profession and encouraging younger generations to pursue their ambitions. Our teams are regularly involved in outreach programs, we have teamed up with Speakers for Schools and RIBA Learning, and signed up to the Social Mobility Pledge, the Lord Mayor of London Pledge, See-It-Be-It Sheffield and DYW Glasgow.

The University of Lincoln Medical School is a landmark project for Lincolnshire offering an inspiring environment for medical education and setting a new standard for sustainability, design excellence, and innovation on the University’s campus. The new medical school is a key part of a regional strategy to address chronic specialist medical staffing shortages, particularly in primary care and mental health. The 5,500m2 five-storey building features an active lecture theatre, laboratories, pro-section anatomy suites, equipped with cutting-edge diagnostic tools, and a clinical skills suite with mock consultation rooms to simulate hospital wards or a GP’s surgery. This facility now equips students with cutting-edge resources and an exceptional learning environment, ensuring future doctors are prepared to make a real difference. Alongside the technical brief the University was keen that the building visually and physically promoted health and wellbeing. The new medical school is therefore based on biophilic design principles and is the most sustainable building on their campus. Back in November, Steven Lennon and Kathryn Dowse-McCreanor, had the privilege of sharing their expertise at the Fire Station Design & Construction Workshop. Their insightful sessions explored our approaches shaping the future of modern fire station design: Steven delved into "Design Evolution and Innovations in Modern Fire Station Design: The Journey to Decontamination", spotlighting strategies that prioritize firefighter health and safety. Kathryn discussed "Training Facilities and Sustainability", with a particular emphasis on the game-changing potential to design Passivhaus Fire Stations, setting a new benchmark for energy efficiency in essential infrastructure. It was inspiring to see these crucial topics spark meaningful discussions about innovation, sustainability, and resilience within this vital sector. Looking ahead, we’re thrilled to mark our calendars for next year’s Fire Station Design & Construction Workshop, happening on the 13th-14th October 2025. Watch this space as we continue to explore and share ideas that shape the spaces supporting our everyday heroes. #FireStationDesign #ConstructionWorkshop #Passivhaus #EmergencyServicesArchitects #DesignForSafety #HLMArchitects"

We’re excited to share the third article in our Infection Prevention and Control series for the Health Estate Journal, written by Head of Healthcare, Neil Orpwood. This latest article dives into the importance of whole-system thinking in managing complex design challenges, mitigating risks, and maintaining compliance with evolving guidance and legislation. Neil highlights how the innovative tool, we have designed in-house help to track, manage, and evidence IPC considerations throughout all stages of the design process. These tools not only ensure compliance with updated frameworks, but also strengthen the golden thread of accountability critical to delivering safer and more effective healthcare spaces.
