Mental Health Care

Providing mental health care and support to people in Sheffield.

About us

Sheffield Mind Ltd has been providing mental health care and support to people in the city for over 40 years. We won’t give up until everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets both support and respect. We want to see parity of care for people with mental and physical illness and to de-stigmatise mental health conditions so people are not discriminated against. Our mission is to intervene early to improve wellbeing and provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. We work locally with our partners to improve services and increase awareness and accessibility. We are a creative and forward thinking organisation and we have been working hard to reach people in communities which have traditionally failed to engage with services, but in which there are higher than average incidences of mental ill health. We have built new and exciting partnerships so we can promote greater awareness and understanding of mental health to different sectors and we look forward to developing these relationships and to working in shared projects and initiatives.

  • We've had a lovely visit from Graham Abercrombie, Head of Community from Sheffield FC - The World’s First Football Club. You may think - what were they talking about? Getting active and physical activity can improve our mood and it also opens up lots of opportunities to make friends and try something new. There are many studies which have shown that doing physical activity can improve mental health. For example, it can help with: Better sleep– by taking part in physical activity, we can really tire ourselves out, making us feel sleepier at the end of the day. (Also see our tips on sleep.) Happier moods– physical activity releases endorphins which are hormones that make us feel good and give us a burst of energy. Managing stress, anxiety or intrusive and racing thoughts –Being physically active can also relieve the mind and helps focus on other things- this can help us to cope with difficult times. Self-esteem- regularly exercising can help with self-esteem, because we not only improve ourselves physically but we also begin to believe in ourselves. Research suggests that no matter what our physical ability, our self-esteem will improve when we exercise because we’re more motivated and energetic. Watch this space, as we all left the meeting buzzing with excitement! Look at these happy faces! • Did you know that Sheffield Mind Ltd runs a hoarding support service, funded by The National Lottery Community Fund? We offer brief CBT, one-to-one support, group support, plus training - and we're planning a national conference this year, to share our learning from the past 6 years. Hoarding is still a very misunderstood issue, so we're very proud of the work that our Magpies team do and all of this fantastic work has been made possible by players of the The National Lottery - so thank you! Here's service manager, Jon Friend, delivering some training earlier today. 😊

From Beckenbauers to the Right Plan: My Marathon Journey - So far! When I started running 12 years ago, the goal was simple, lose a bit of weight. My ‘running shoes’ of choice? A pair of Adidas Beckenbauers. Not because they were designed for running, but because they looked sporty. Soon, I realised I needed actual running shoes, so I grabbed the cheapest pair off the shelf at Sports Direct. I’d wear them until the soles disintegrated or a niggle forced me to buy another bargain-bin special, without a second thought about gait, foot strike, or what my body actually needed. I kept running, entered a few races, but never got any quicker. A half marathon felt like the absolute limit. Unsurprisingly, this approach caught up with me in 2021 when I developed a Morton’s Neuroma that sidelined me for months at a time. That was the wake-up call. I got a full gait analysis, sought expert advice, and invested in a pair of Altra Olympus, costing as much as my last three pairs combined! They weren’t as stylish as Adidas, but they were built for my feet, and that changed everything. By 2023, I had the right shoes and avoided injuries, but I had no structured plan—so progress was hit and miss. And 2024? The less said, the better. But I had a goal: run a marathon. I made multiple attempts to build a plan myself, but each time, I got sick or overdid it within five weeks. Over the festive break, I realised that if I was serious about this, I needed the right plan to match the right tools. Fast forward to now—week 10 of 18. I ran a half marathon last Saturday, just for fun, no medal, no crowds. I’ve had my strongest February since my Strava records began, and I feel stronger than ever. The difference? Discipline, pacing myself, and reluctantly accepting that fuelling properly actually matters! And in just 9 weeks, I’ll be running the Leeds Marathon, double the distance I’ve ever done before. I’m pushing myself further than I ever thought possible, and I’m doing it for a cause that means a lot to me raising money for Sheffield Mind Ltd, a fantastic mental health charity. And just like running, investing isn’t just about getting the latest gear and hoping for the best. Without a goal, discipline, and a clear strategy, you’re likely to fall short. But don’t take my word for it, i’ll let one of my fellow Skybound Wealth Management Striders (I like that, maybe we should set up a club?!) and experienced financial advisers such as Edmund Teasdale - Chartered MCSI David Neville ACSI, LLB (Hons) Kieron Donovan and Jeff Pollock explain that part! If you’d like to support my fundraising efforts, you can donate here: https://lnkd.in/eshspTvW #running #marathontraining #leedsmarathon #mentalhealth #sheffieldmind #discipline #skyboundstriders

  • Feels like spring is in the air. For some of us, a time of reflection, decision-making, change, new beginnings. A therapist cannot make a decision for you, but they can help you look at the problem from different angles, think through the possible results of each option, ask questions that help you see the issue more clearly and completely. Revive @SheffieldMind is delivered by Sheffield Mind Ltd's empathetic therapists, who can support you to process difficult situations at home or at work, past or present, by providing a safe space where you can talk and reflect. We're convenient and flexible - we offer therapy appointments face-to-face in our offices on Sharrow Lane, over the phone, or on Zoom. Revive costs £50 per session for adults and £60 per session for children & young people. Appointments are available weekday, daytime, as well as evenings and Saturday mornings. All proceeds go towards supporting the charitable work of Sheffield Mind Ltd; helping to increase capacity and improve our services.

  • Thank you to Bilan Omer for organising last Saturdays’ event, Empowering Women to Take Care of Their Mental Health. Attitudes to - and experiences of - mental health issues vary across communities and all too often women put their own health needs to one side, to be mothers, daughters, wives, carers, work colleagues and other roles. Saturday’s event was all about encouraging women to support each other to prioritise their mental health – it was a lovely day and our Director of Services, Edyta Bancer - Dunham and our trainer, Ieva Jacevičiūtė spent their time talking to women about simple ways in which we can look after ourselves. If you’re looking for advice about mental health, you can visit our website https://lnkd.in/ej_bc3DW #mentalhealth #support #empowerement #localcharity #womentogether
