Rivers are Connected. Actions to Protect Them Must Be Connected Too. The health of #freshwater systems is core to that of surrounding landscapes – but much more must be done to factor freshwater health into conserved and protected area management. About us
As freshwater carves its way towards the ocean and collects in natural basins it creates some of the most diverse habitats on the planet. Rivers, lakes and wetlands cover less than 1% of Earth’s surface yet are home to 12% of all known species. This wealth of life is at risk of being lost. Compounding threats such as pollution, overexploitation, habitat loss and invasive species introductions are, in decades, rapidly altering the conditions to which freshwater species have adapted over many millennia. Rivers, lakes and wetlands are already considered to have an extinction rate four to six times higher than marine or terrestrial environments. Amongst the most threatened groups of freshwater species are fish. Of some 15,000 species of freshwater fish approximately one in three are threatened with extinction. Without conservation action it is clear that many of these species will be lost from our planet forever.

Scientists have definitive proof that ghosts exist! 👻 But this is no phantom, and no horror story: the Critically Endangered Giant Salmon Carp – the Mekong Ghost – has been recorded for the first time since 2005, signalling fresh hope for the Mekong region. The species was previously presumed dead, so this comes as very exciting news. Happy Halloween! Read more about this exciting rediscovery here 👉 👉 👉 https://lnkd.in/ey8HRUXR 👈 👈 👈

“The rediscovery of the Giant Salmon Carp is a reason for hope, not just for this species but for the entire Mekong ecosystem.” As delegates gather at COP16 Colombia to discuss how to save Earth's biodiversity, the Giant Salmon Carp's rediscovery reminds the world we must prioritise inland waters to give the planet's most threatened species a good shot at survival 👇 https://lnkd.in/ey8HRUXR Zeb Hogan USAID

Celebrating #WorldRiverDolphinDay? Dolphin-ately! 🐬 The Indus River dolphin (Platanista minor) is a unique freshwater species endemic to the rivers of the lower Indus basin in Pakistan. Known also as the Indus blind dolphin, the species lost the ability to see due to the turbid water it calls home. They navigate using echolocation, as well as swimming on their sides, while trailing one flipper along the river bottom. Unfortunately they have also navigated their way onto the IUCN Red List, with major threats to the species including infrastructure like dams. Find out more here 👇 https://buff.ly/40cQCiu The Indus River dolphin is one of the 50 landmark species identified in Fantastic Freshwater, a report highlighting the diversity and beauty of freshwater species and the immense threats they face to their survival. The Fantastic Freshwater: 50 landmark species for conservation report is led by SHOAL, the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC), the IUCN SSC Freshwater Conservation Committee, and the Global Center for Species Survival at the Indianapolis Zoo. 📸 Nyal Mueenuddin (WWF Pakistan)
