Join Shout Clinical Director Sarah Kendrick and two of our Shout Volunteers on #WorldSuicidePreventionDay, Tuesday 10 September at 12pm to learn how you can support someone who is struggling with suicidal thoughts. The theme of World Suicide Prevention Day this year is ‘Changing the narrative around suicide’, so we’re going to set about changing the part of the old narrative that says suicide shouldn’t be talked about. Because talking about suicide is how we help prevent it. Sign up: https://lnkd.in/etC9afNX

"When I started volunteering not only did I find myself helping people, as I had wanted to do, but it gave me a sense of worth that had been missing for some time. I will never stop volunteering for Shout because the knowledge and experience I have already gained is priceless." As one of Shout’s very first volunteers, Angus has given more than 1,000 hours of mental health support to hundreds of children, young people and adults across the UK. If you're thinking about becoming a Shout Volunteer but want to know more about what it would be like, we are running two webinars on 3 September at 12pm and 7pm, explaining all the ins and outs of volunteering. It's always been our ambition to expand the reach of support we can give to people in the UK through provision of digital products and services. Bringing The Mix Charity together with Mental Health Innovations will mean that we will be able to improve the wellbeing of millions of under 25s, who we know face unprecedented levels of mental health challenges, through a broader offering of support and empowerment. We can't wait for what's next.

Mental Health Innovations (MHI) and The Mix have announced they are merging, with a focus on strengthening early intervention for young people. Both charities are oriented around their digital offer, with MHI specialising in mental health data insights and The Mix delivering confidential support for under-25s online and via phone and social channels. They have worked in partnership since 2018, when MHI launched its free Shout 24/7 text messaging support service.

Farming in Britain demands a special kind of resilience. It is tough physical work and it can be even tougher on mental health, so we’ve launched a new partnership to support British farmers, thanks to funding from Hawkstone. Virtually all UK farmers (95%) under the age of 40 rank poor mental health as one of the biggest hidden problems facing the industry (Farm Safety Foundation, 2021). They face unique challenges, particularly during demanding periods like harvest season. The partnership is supported by Hawkstone creator Jeremy Clarkson and farmer Kaleb Cooper, to tackle the hidden problem of mental health in the farming community. “Farming is an incredibly hard job and there are statistics out there to show that mental health challenges in farming have risen in recent years. Some people don’t like talking about their problems face-to-face or find it difficult to open up to someone they know, so we have teamed up with Shout to allow farmers to send a simple text and get the support they need.” - Kaleb

Racism can be very hard on mental wellbeing - it can make you feel that you aren’t able to be yourself, forcing you to disconnect from your cultural identity and at its worst, makes you feel fearful and unsafe. Here are some tips to help you cope if you’re facing racism right now. Remember, we’re here for you. If you’re looking for support or community groups like we’ve suggested in tip 2, Mind have a helpful list on their website: https://ow.ly/xJ8u50SUGJc

    • How to look after your mental health if you're experiencing racism
    • Speak to someone you trust about how you’re feeling

Let a family member, friend or faith leader know how you’re feeling. Sometimes just talking can improve how you’re feeling, but speaking to someone else can be the first step to getting the support you need.

If you’re not sure who to speak to, remember that we’re always here to talk, 24/7.
    • Find supportive groups and like-minded communities

Sometimes it’s easier to speak to others who have experienced racism themselves, who will have a better understanding of what it’s like.
    • Join a movement or group making change for the better

Taking action as part of an anti-racist organisation or movement can help you feel optimistic about the future, as well as build connections with likeminded people.
    • Update your social media feed

If your social media feed is causing you to dwell on upsetting thoughts, consider unfollowing accounts that contribute to this.

Try to follow accounts that make you feel hopeful.

18-year-old Ioan completed the Everest Base Camp trek for Shout in March this year, after months of training hard, running in marathons and other events to prepare for such an incredible but challenging trip. Ioan raised £4,277 for the Shout service - enough to cover the cost of 427 conversations with people who are struggling with their mental health. "I know many people close to myself that have suffered from mental health troubles and at times the right help was not available. I chose to fundraise for Shout because of the incredible work they do. They are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and are there for anyone who may need their service." - Ioan Read all about the trip: https://lnkd.in/eBuWdzXq
