Iran-Israel: Regional escalation scenarios Sibylline released a Situation Update Brief outlining the most likely scenarios involving Israeli retaliation against Iran. In the past week, Israel has assassinated the leader of Lebanese Hizballah (LH), Hassan Nasrallah, and launched ground operations into southern Lebanon. In response, Iran launched 181 ballistic missiles against Israel on 1 October. These developments have raised regional tensions to their highest level since Hamas’ attack against Israel on 7 October 2023. - Scenario 1: A limited Israeli response targets military infrastructure, prompting no direct Iranian response (12%) - Scenario 2: A limited Israeli response against military infrastructure prompts a limited Iranian response (14%) - Scenario 3: An Israeli strike against Iranian oil facilities – and possibly limited military targets – prompts a limited Iranian response (29% – most likely) - Scenario 4: Broad Israeli retaliation against military and/or key infrastructure prompts Iran to escalate (27%) - Scenario 5: Israel causes minimal damage to Iranian nuclear facilities, prompting escalation (11%) - Scenario 6: Israel destroys an Iranian nuclear facility; escalation leads to a state of war (7%) Situation Update Briefs are one of many intelligence products within our global intelligence reporting portfolio. ISRAEL-LEBANON: IDF STRIKE KILLING LEBANESE HIZBALLAH LEADER HAS SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED RISK OF ESCALATION On 27 September, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted an airstrike against Beirut (Lebanon). The strike targeted the alleged headquarters of Lebanese Hizballah (LH) and killed LH leader Hassan Nasrallah. FORECAST - LH is highly likely to retaliate forcefully in the coming days, significantly elevating security risks in northern Israel. - In addition to an elevated intensity of strikes against northern Israel, LH is also likely to increase attacks against central Israel, including Tel Aviv (Tel Aviv district), raising the risk of major armed escalation. - In the coming week, Iranian proxies in the region are likely to increase their attacks against Israel, elevating security risks, including in Southern district.
