Volcanic eruptions are one of Earth's most dramatic and violent agents of change. These powerful explosive eruptions can not only drastically alter the land for tens of kilometers around a volcano but can endanger human lives, hence predicting or forecasting volcanic eruptions has been at the forefront of scientific efforts. Distributed acoustic sensing, given its high spatio-temporal sampling, has become a useful volcano monitoring tool in recent years. Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) has been using Silixa’s DAS system to monitor the seismic activity around Etna. In the southern Etna flank, about 5 km away from the summit crater, there are fiber optic cables installed in a 200 meter deep borehole. Utilizing these fibers, Silixa’s iDAS-MG has been keeping a close watch on Etna’s seismic activity for several years but especially since June 2024. Etna, the highest active volcano on the European continent, generated a sequence of lava fountains from the South Eastern crater in the summer of 2024. These spectacular explosive events were characterized by powerful jets of hot mixtures of solid particles and volcanic gases reaching stratospheric heights. These events were accompanied by an increase in volcanic tremor and were captured by the iDAS-MG. The DAS data recorded on 14 August 2024 confirms that the eruption was one of the most powerful events in recent years. The DAS volcanic tremor clearly shows the fast transition from weak Strombolian activity towards a sustained eruptive column at 22:30 UTC. The explosive event suddenly waned at 00:30 UTC and stopped on 15th August at 01:03 UTC when the DAS volcanic tremor sharply decreased. #seismic #seismology #volcanology #DAS #fiberoptics #volcano #Etna #DistributedSensing

Join us at the SSA Photonic Seismology Meeting, titled Lighting the Way Forward, in Vancouver, Canada on 7–10 October 2024. Advances in Silixa’s phase-coherent iDAS technology in recent years have created new opportunities for a range of new geophysical and nontechnical applications. The ability to collect high resolution acoustic data utilizing dark fibers over very long ranges is invaluable. It enables continuous, remote seismic monitoring of the Earth’s near surface, even in highly populated areas, delivering better understanding of the subsurface. The technology is offering a more precise insight into the effects of climate change and there is also the potential to help predict environmental catastrophes such as earthquakes, tsunamis or landslides. To learn more about our iDAS technology and to see a live demo of our Carina® Sensing System, see us at the event.
