Imaging Time: The Fourth Dimension

About us

“Time is often considered as the fourth dimension, along with the length, width and depth that form the fabric of space-time. Conventional cameras observe only two of those dimensions, inferring depth from spatial cues and record time only coarsely relative to many fast phenomena in the natural world. 4D time cameras based on single photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) can record the time and depth dimensions of a scene at picosecond scales commensurate with the speed of light. These SPAD devices have seen their transformation from a research curiosity to a mainstream semiconductor technology with billions of SPAD devices in consumer use in mobile phones for depth sensing autofocus-assist. In the near future, next generation SPAD-based time cameras can be expected to play a major societal role, within optical radars (LIDARs) for robotic vision and driverless cars, surgical guidance for cancer and perhaps even to add two further dimensions to the phone camera in your pocket!” Singular Photonics offer the next generation of SPAD image sensors.

    Welcome to the inaugural post from the team at Singular Photonics. Some of you may have already seen us pop up at a few events, but we wanted to reach a few milestones before we made an official announcement.   So (for those who don't know us already), here's a little bit about us:   🔄 We are a spin out from the The University of Edinburgh CMOS Sensors and Systems Group 💡 This has been a long time dream of world leading SPAD Sensor expert Robert Henderson 👏 A big welcome to his fellow Co-Founders, Shahida Imani (CEO), Aravind Venugopalan Nair Jalajakumari (CTO) and Neil Finlayson (Strategic Advisor) 🎇 We have already appointed our first Non Executive Director, Pete Hutton who brings a wealth of experience in semi-conductor industry having previously held the role of President Group Product Design at Arm 🏢 We are going to have the best views of Edinburgh from our new offices at the Higgs Centre for Innovation next to the THE ROYAL OBSERVATORY (EDINBURGH) TRUST (hopefully that won't distract us from getting some work done) ⏫ We have been working in stealth mode, but have been supported by a fantastic ecosystem so a big shout out to the Silicon Catalyst.UK where we are one of the first Cohort in the UK Government sponsored UK Chipstart Program, headed up by Sean Redmond and supported by the team including Henry Nurser and Ross Addinall and of course our very own mentor Richard Ord   We attended a few conferences, thank you to Quantonation for the invite to pitch at Q2B in Paris earlier this month, the Global Semiconductor Alliance where there was a very serious push in Women Leadership Initiative spearheaded by the amazing Jodi Shelton and where we pitched again. And let's not forget the ISE 2024 conference where Robert Henderson chaired a number of sessions. There was also a quick trip to Semi Con in Korea as part of the Innovate UK Semi Conductor GEM (and who would turn down an invitation to the Ambassador's Residence)   💷 And last but not least, today we are celebrating closing our PreSEED investment (more on that coming soon) so it's now full steam ahead to secure SEED round which will really support our ambitious growth plans. Exciting times ahead …   ⚖ We couldn't leave without giving a huge thank you to the support from Edinburgh Innovations team, our legal team Julie Nixon WS at TLT LLP who patiently guided us through the spin out process.   Ok, so back to work but we will be with you soon with our website launch and can't wait to share all things shiny and new in the SPAD sensor world.   It would of course never be a good post if we didn’t share some behind the (and in front of) scenes pictures…   #semiconductors #sensors #spads
