Unearthing Sustainability Insights for global mining and metals.

About us

Skarn Associates' goal is to support the mining and metals sectors in reducing their environmental impacts, by providing actionable strategic insight into energy use, GHG emissions, decarbonisation economics and water use. Based on our detailed asset level analysis of over 2,600 mines, development projects, smelters and refineries globally, including forecasts to 2030, we deliver deep insight into the interplay between mineral economics and environmental impacts. Our most recent launch, the Skarn Decarbonisation Quarterly, tracks global trends in decarbonising supply chains for key energy transition metals. Skarn's Water subsidiary, Skarn Water, provides unique benchmarking of water stewardship for 450+ copper and gold mines, with development under way to extend coverage to zinc and nickel. With climate changing, water stewardship and increasing production risks from drought and floods are becoming ever more important influencers of mining output and profit. Leading edge data, analysis, forecasts and consultancy from Skarn enable our clients to benchmark energy and emissions performance and: - analyse the proposed decarbonisation pathways of different companies, highlighting risks, timelines and costs - assess technological prospects such as fleet electrification and Power Purchase Agreements - understand the policies and standards which are driving change. Skarn’s senior team has immense and diverse experience, working for leading mining information businesses such as Wood Mackenzie, CRU, S&P Global and Thompson Reuters Refinitiv. Key personnel include Mark Fellows (Co-founder & CEO), Nick Morgan (Chairman), Sophie Chung (Director Strategy & Development), Rob Garlick (CFO), Martin Hollands (Director, Environment), Fernando Araya (COO) and Kate Cummings (Head of Commercial). Clients include some of the largest global mining companies, such as Anglo American, BHP, Glencore, Rio Tinto, Vale, Freeport and Teck, plus major financial institutions.

🎙️ ICYMI, Skarn Podcast: A Conversation with Krunal Desai of First Mode We discussed with Krunal Desai how the industry feels about new technologies like hydrogen fuel cells. Many OEMs, including Komatsu and Caterpillar, have taken a cautious approach, allowing pioneers like First Mode to lead in BEV and hydrogen fuel cell tech. The true impetus however appears to come from mining companies driven by ESG awareness and shareholder pressures. First Mode's work with Anglo American, starting in 2019, demonstrates their strategic entry into the market at a pivotal time, enabling them to drive significant progress. 🔗  Tune in to the full episode https://lnkd.in/dbxscAeh and discover more about First Mode's decarbonisation solutions for heavy industry.

As we accelerate towards a net-zero future, the environmental and human rights impacts of electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly apparent. Global EV sales have surged from 3 million in 2020 to a projected 40 million by 2030, increasing copper demand significantly. By 2040, each EV will contain around 73kg of copper, compared to just 30kg in ICE vehicles. This rise in demand leads to a higher water footprint in copper mining, averaging around 10m³ per EV, which can be up to 6 times the water used in manufacturing the vehicle itself. The new Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) requires EU car manufacturers to address such issues transparently. Given that much copper is sourced from water-stressed areas, this impact on local communities is significant and must be managed carefully. #waterinmining #watermanagement #energytransition https://lnkd.in/dUP6CSVh

CEO @ Skarn Associates: providing deep insight into the energy transition, GHG emissions and water impacts in the mining sector.

0.019 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions per tonne of zinc production. That metric means that Ivanhoe Mines' Kipushi has the lowest Scope 1+2 GHG emission intensity of any zinc mine globally, thanks to super-high ore grades and a hydroelectric power supply. For more details see Ivanhoe's press release; contact me at Skarn Associates for more details on our ground-breaking GHG and water impact benchmarking services. https://lnkd.in/ej-uHgdD

Water, Mining and Metals. General Manager Skarn Water at Skarn Associates. Data driven Sustainability and Finance Impact Research and Consultancy

Excited to announce the release of updates for the Skarn Water Gold and Copper benchmark tools. The updated Skarn Water benchmark tools provide annual water-use and climate data from 2018 to 2023 representing 16.8 million tonnes of global copper and over 55 million ounces of gold production annually.   Skarn Water is unique in benchmarking and contextualising water use performance and the business risks in mining. This is becoming even more important considering the recent global push on disclosure regulations, transparency and environmental product due diligence requirements. Each mining operation has a direct impact through the volume of water it withdraws from and discharges to the local environment, but at the same time may be exposed to production risk due to for example lack of water availability. On average, it takes close to 130 cubic meters of water to produce a tonne of copper, but the top 25% performers only consume 82 cubic meters to do so, while the bottom 25% performers require over 160 cubic meters. In the case of gold mining this difference is even more impressive: evaluating 275 gold mines shows that the bottom 25% performers consume more than 3 times more water than the top 25% to produce the same ounce of gold.
