⭐ Associate Professor or Professor of Optical and Quantum Networks ⭐ We have a unique opportunity to shape the future of telecommunications alongside world-leading experts at the Smart Internet Lab at the University of Bristol. The role will include: 🔹 Your primary research focus will be on Optical and Quantum Networks, utilising mathematical models, state-of-the-art laboratory facilities at Smart Internet Lab, and digital twinning infrastructure available at Bristol Digital Futures Institute. 🔹 Your goal will be to advance the design and solutions of classical optical and quantum networks, including co-existence, in line with our research vision. 🔹 Areas of interest include high-capacity Optical switched networks, quantum entangled networks, advanced network control and management, AI/ML for future optical/quantum networks, security, resilience, sustainability and computing and network co-design. 🔹 Undertake teaching and project supervision duties at the undergraduate, MSc, and PhD levels, with a particular focus on our BEng/MEng in Computer Science and Electronics Engineering, as well as our Masters programmes in Optical and Quantum Networks and related technologies. 🔹 You should demonstrate an interest in developing innovative ways to integrate teaching, research, and technology development. Dr Rasheed Hussain was recently invited as a Keynote speaker at the prestigious "Brazilian Symposium on Information and Computational Systems Security #sbseg2024 at the PIT – Parque de Inovação Tecnológica São José dos Campos to give a talk on Digital Twins Security 👉 https://shorturl.at/Si0bW We asked Dr Hussain to reflect on the experience: 🔹 What was the main purpose for going to deliver the talk in Brazil? Prof Michele Nogueira invited me to give a Keynote talk at one of the biggest cybersecurity conferences in Brazil. During covid, I delivered an invited talk at a University in Brazil and when I was invited few months ago, I thought it was a golden opportunity to go and see the research work carried out at different universities in Brazil. It was an opportunity to meet students from different research groups and universities, as well as researchers from Brazilian industry. My aim was to look for research collaboration opportunities between the Smart Internet Lab and Brazilian universities. It was an honour to be invited as a Keynote speaker in such a prestigious conference and represent the University of Bristol, the Smart Internet Lab and Bristol Digital Futures Institute. I also had the chance to talk about our research work and the facilities that we enjoy at the University of Bristol. 🔹 What were the benefits of attending? It was an amazing opportunity for me to connect with my previous collaborators especially Prof. Nogueira and her students. I met other academics and their students, talked about research collaborations and potentially hosting their PhD students at the Smart Internet Lab. I also had a chance to talk to other Keynote Speakers from Carnegie Mellon University, USA, and Northeastern University, USA on possible research collaborations with us. 🔹 Were there any follow ups following your talk? There were discussions with colleagues from ITA Brazil about some research collaborations as well as the potential in hosting their current PhD students for a short time to carry out research of our mutual interest. We also discussed potential funding opportunities between Brazil and UK focusing on the topics of the interest for both Brazilian partners and Smart Internet Lab. 🔹 What did you learn that you could bring back to your own work? Use of Digital Twin technology for network security is a hot research topic these days and given that we have state of the art research facilities available at the Smart Internet Lab and the Bristol Digital Futures Institute, it was reassuring that we can conduct quality research in this direction. Furthermore, the use of AI and LLMs were also discussed for cyber and network security which is what we could focus on, in the Smart Internet Lab. #keynote #brazil #digitaltwinsecurity

We are looking forward to UKTIN’s showcase of their novel AI R&D Discovery toolkit on the 3rd October at the Smart Internet Lab. The toolkit, developed by Tom Barratt, technical lead, Savvas Mantzouranidis and Lon Barfield, harnesses the power of #AI and plays a central role in UKTIN’s aims of mapping the UK telecom’s current R&D ecosystem.      The problem  The toolkit addresses a critical gap the telecoms sector has faced for decades - dispersed data across numerous sources making it challenging for professionals to stay updated on developments, trends, and opportunities.    The solution  The UKTIN toolkit quickly summarises vast amounts of data and delivers actionable insights - such as potential companies in which to invest or university research groups working in a specific area.  By consolidating this fragmented information into a cohesive, user-friendly platform, the toolkit helps users navigate the current R&D ecosystem and enables all stakeholders to understand the existing R&D capabilities available in the UK.  Along with an interactive data interpretation function, an AI assistant allows users to chat and interrogate the data. 

We are excited to share that we have been recognised as a Key Innovator for 5GASP : 5G Application & Services experimentation and certification Platform. The European Commission has identified the University of Bristol’s Smart Internet Lab as a "Key Innovator" in the development of an innovation addressing existing market needs. The selected innovation is for Efficient Resource Handover Prediction in Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) that was designed and delivered by the Smart Internet Lab, University of Bristol as a result of our participation in the EU-funded H2020 5GASP project (2021-2024). This award-winning innovation is classified within the “Exploring” category, which encompasses early phases of technological readiness.
