Smile Group Charity

Mental Health Care

A perinatal mental health charity in Cheshire East supporting families through a vulnerable time in their lives.

About us

Smile Group was set up in 2011 on Mother's Day by Natalie Nuttall & Ruth Williams, who both had experience of perinatal mental illness and saw a glaring gap in community support. Smile operates a blend of services across Cheshire East, including peer support groups, 1-1 talk therapy, home visits, family sessions and 1-1 support. Smile has supported more than 600 women and their families in the last three years alone through its peer support drop-ins, 1-1 talk therapy and home visits programme. Smile Group is featured in the RCGPs' Perinatal Mental Health Toolkit of best practice nationally and has been supported by Comic Relief's Maternal Mental Health programme. It is also a member of the Perinatal Mental Health Partnership and helps to coordinate an award winning national maternal mental health matters awareness campaign each year. Its peer support groups run on a weekly basis out of children's centres in Macclesfield, Congleton & Sandbach.

We loved welcoming Vicky to our Crewe peer support group this morning. Creating safer, welcoming spaces for people to come together & share their experiences is so important. We also know how vital it is for mums, dads & partners to have some 'me time' in the transition to parenthood, so this beautiful Halloween craft experience was a great addition to the session. Thank you Vicky!

Wonderful morning with Smile Group Charity in Crewe today. We chatted while we made little woolly ghosts and shared our experiences of childbirth and postnatal mental health challenges. A common theme is that we don't realise how unwell we are until much further down the line. Early intervention can dramatically improve the outcome for new birthing parents. We need to talk about our experiences to help new parents on their journeys and continue to remove the stigma around mental health postpartum. I experienced post natal depression and anxiety. It was awful and robbed me of a large chunk of those precious first weeks. I can barely remember beyond a hollow grey fear. My boy is my absolute rock and I cherish every second with him. But it was so hard. And still is sometimes - I don't think anxiety ever totally heals. Talk to your friends. Check in on new parents. Make them a brew. Or a meal. Or pop a wash on. And listen to what is going on with them. Really listen. I will be at the Congleton session on the 23rd from 10am at the Congleton Family Hub New Street Congleton CW12 3AH from 10am. Smile offers a quality grassroots service that is accessible, relatable and built around parents’ needs. Combining first-hand experience of perinatal mental health challenges with professional expertise, Smile is here to remind you that you are never alone in your experience and that you can go on to truly thrive in parenthood. We're always moved by feedback from parents who've engaged with our services & share how it has changed their lives. One mum said: "I don't have to put on a brave face at Smile. I can just be myself." It might sound simple and obvious, but often as new parents we're experiencing massive changes internally and yet trying to look like we 'have it all together'. The truth is that safe spaces which enable us to be honest can create massive shifts in our experience of parenthood. If you've come through our service - either attending peer support groups, talk therapy, home visits or family sessions - please take a few minutes to complete the survey below. It makes a big difference to us & helps funders see the immense value of our work. https://lnkd.in/eWtuhCmG #feedback #peersupport #perinatamentalhealth #charity

Wherever you are in your experience of early parenthood, we see you. We hope it feels like a community being part of Smile and accessing whichever services feel most suited to you, from our blend of peer support groups, talk therapy, home visits (by healthcare professional referral) or monthly family sessions. While we love seeing faces regularly, there is also joy in witnessing parents beginning to step back (at whatever pace suits). It might be prompted by returning to work, children turning three or simply a realisation that it's not needed quite so much as it was. That's actually a beautiful thing to witness. There is nothing lovelier than watching recovery in action. And while we're here so you can feel held & listened to through the vulnerable times, we also stand back and watch you take your own bold steps into parenthood. One of the more precious aspects of co-delivering the service is to see natural friendships emerge - and for many of us those become very special..because to know someone through their hardest times, is to see all of them (not just the shiny stuff). X
