State of Design Affairs: Looking at the people, projects and opinions shaping the design & creative industries.

About us

SODA is a design magazine for the creative industries, featuring original content written and curated by our staff and guest writers. Our goal is to share the stories of interesting and unique people and projects within the creative industries and provide a platform for points of view that are shaping the design and innovation disciplines that we all live, breath and love. The magazine was set up in 2016 by TDC PR, the London-based communications consultancy working with clients at the intersection of design, innovation, creative, technology, culture and business. Now, in 2024, we are re-launching with a refreshed website and renewed purpose as a space for long-form, in-depth analysis and commentary on the state of design affairs. If you share our passion for design and would like to collaborate with us - whether it’s on an interview feature, Q&A or opinion piece - we are keen to hear from you. How can innovative packaging design transform not just the look but the entire experience of a product? 🧐 This is a question we asked ourselves when we discovered SOURGLASS, a groundbreaking beer concept recently launched by Fitzwood Brewery and brand design agency, Lewis Moberly, in collaboration with the Make a Mark™ initiative. 🍺 Mark Tosey, Production Director at Lewis Moberly said: “The bottle structure is inspired by the hourglass profile made using 100% recycled glass and the outer frame structure is sustainably sourced from used oak casks in which the beer is aged. This acts as a protective case, a cradle platform for the inverted bottle, and as a centrepiece for serving. The refillable bottle has a custom closure, made from repurposed copper from the brewery, that delivers a slow-release pour.” This innovative project pushes the boundaries of packaging innovation, looking at every element from glass to labels to design, redefining both the drinking experience as well as the commodity perception. Curious to see how Sourglass is challenging the norms of beer design? 🍻 Click the link to dive into the full story and explore our other features on SODA this month: https://lnkd.in/eJjm6avw #SODAZine #PackagingInnovation #SustainableDesign #Branding

We’re back with another installment of our ‘Meet the Grad’ series and this week’s talented graduate is Sam Bonser of The Manchester Metropolitan University. A talented artist and visual storyteller, Sam loves creating site-specific atmospheric animation to capture the sense of feel of those places. Sam’s final year project, Glimmer, is a 2D digitally animated film celebrating creativity and the magic of observational drawing. “The project is a love letter to my creative process,” Sam shares. "It is easy to lose sight of the everyday magic of the world. A glimmer is the opposite of a trigger, it is something sparks joy and a sense of calm.” Click the link to read the full Q&A and discover how Sam is using animation to spark joy and connect with the world: https://lnkd.in/eMZC446q #SODAZine #MeetTheGrad #Design #Animation

🏞️ Designing a space that connects with nature and community 🏞️ Creative studio Raw Clay recently crafted the identity and interiors for Soulspace, bringing the vision of an innovative new co-working concept nestled along the River Wey in Guildford, to life. Inspired by the natural surroundings, the team used analogue methods like continuous lines and organic materials to create a brand identity that is harmonious with the environment. The connection to the river influenced every detail, from the natural materials – stone, clay, and wood – to a brand pattern inspired by collaged rock shapes, cut from old wildlife magazines. 🌿 As Creative Director Bekki Stovell explains, the goal was to give members "a deep sense of belonging within their work environment, and the nature that surrounds it." With the rebirth of workspace design in recent years, how do you think modern workspaces can be designed to better foster wellbeing and boost productivity? 💭 Want to discover more unique design projects? 💦 Diving a little deeper into our SODA Splash, our first feature spotlights a newly branded running club with charm... 🏃♂️ Freelance brand designer Dom Edwards is passionate about design, sports and community, so when the opportunity to brand runner and influencer Jonny Davies’ run club came about, it was the perfect partnership. 🤝 Davies’ club, Scrambled Legs, had started to gain quite the following and he needed a brand that would help him on his mission to bring people together. 💚 Reflecting on his design approach, Edwards said: "Sometimes, simplicity works best. After a long run, your legs feel scrambled, so what better way to represent that than with some wibbly, wobbly legs?" The brand’s playful egg theme and distinctive yolky yellow inject fun and energy into an otherwise monochrome running scene. 🍳 "As a designer, it’s not very often that you get to wear or even see your designs in real life, and being a huge fan of social running, it feels awesome. I often doubt my own illustration skills, but hearing the community say they love the little legs puts a smile on my face every time" says Edwards. As running clubs continue to rise in popularity, competition is quickly growing more fierce. Does this present new opportunities for branding agencies to tap into? 👇 Let us know your thoughts in the comments below and click the link to see our other spotlighted projects this month: https://lnkd.in/eJjm6avw 📸 : Adrian Varzaru & Fritz Buziek #SODAZine #RunningCommunity #SportsBranding #CreativeDesign

Our team here at SODA are passionate about design education and supporting emerging designers, so we wanted to highlight some of the best student projects through our Meet the Grad series. 🤝 Running throughout the whole of summer into September, the Q&A series will ask students from across the country about their final year project, the design challenges they faced, and what their plans are for the future. First in the series is The Glasgow School of Art's Elle Crawley with her project “Digital Doppelgänger”, which explores the intersections of identity, technology, human experience, and video games. The project stems from Crawley’s fascination with how digital spaces can be used to extend our presence and identity beyond the physical world. 🌎 Read the full Q&A on the SODA website: https://lnkd.in/euyMmqKw #SODAZine #MeetTheGrad #Design

🚀 The much-anticipated Paralympic Games have officially begun, making this the perfect moment to reflect on the pivotal role design has played in shaping the Games since 1896, when the Olympics first began. The fact that it has been a century since France 🇫🇷 first hosted the Olympics is symbolic in itself, but the country’s involvement in designing the Games began even earlier. When French aristocrat Baron Pierre de Coubertin joined together the five rings of the Olympic Games logo, he created one of the most famous emblems of our time, using colour to be inclusive of all countries and choosing a shape that represents unity. Now, over 120 years later, Paris 2024 has marked a new milestone in Olympic and Paralympic history, with design signalling a new era of equality in sports. For the first time in history, the Olympics and Paralympics presented a fully integrated brand identity and mascot, created by Conran Design Group. Every other element that was designed for Paris 2024 has followed suit, making the Games an example of true unity in sports. French illustrator Ugo Gattoni designed the Olympic and Paralympic posters as dream-like portrayals of a stadium-city, echoing the slogan devised by W Conran Design: “Games Wide Open”. Even before the Games began, this message of unity and equality was literally carried across the world in the form of the Olympic and Paralympic torch, created by French designer Mathieu Lehanneur to be perfectly symmetrical to show how equal efforts were put into organising both events. It also references that the same number of male and female athletes will take part in the competitions, which is another first for the Games. 🤝 In the stadiums, people will have noticed Olympic pictograms like no other, designed to resemble a coat of arms and signify pride, family, and community. The 47 sports in the Paris 2024 Olympic programme had their own pictograms, eight of which will also be used for the Paralympics. Paris 2024 has truly redefined what design means for the Games. 🚀 As the Paralympics kicked off yesterday, we can't help but wonder... Have you ever considered the hidden power of design in the Olympics and Paralympic Games? 🏅 When you think of this celebratory global multi-sport competition, design might not be the first thing that comes to mind, but its impact is not to be underestimated. Since 1896, design has shaped everything from the creation of one of the world’s most iconic symbols, to the push for greater diversity and inclusion. Posters have provided opportunities for artists and designers from host countries to showcase their work and culture, pictograms have evolved to embrace gender and disability inclusivity, and torches have come in countless forms, one even resembling a potato masher. For Paris 2024, we see the continuation of this legacy in the most inclusive Olympic and Paralympic Games in history, with a striking brand identity by Conran Design Group, eye-catching posters by illustrator, Uno Gattoni, and a torch designed by Mathieu Lehanneur. Tap the link and take a deeper dive into the fascinating history of how designers have transformed the Games throughout history: https://lnkd.in/e389mbCX 🌟 What has been your favourite Olympic and Paralympic design moment? How can we integrate sustainable design to reduce the e-waste of small household goods? 🤔 Earlier this summer, TDC PR presented its Sustainability & Innovation Design Award to De Montfort University graduate Gabriel Kay at New Designers, where exceptional young talent was not in short supply. His project - the Osiris Kettle - was designed to tackle e-waste as small household goods like kettles, toasters and microwaves make up a staggering 32% (around 20 billion kilograms) of annual e-waste disposal. ♻️ We at SODA sat down with Gabriel to delve into the design process behind Osiris and discuss why important design principles like modularity and repair aren’t yet common practice. 🛠 🔗 Learn more about Gabriel’s inspiration for the project and how Osiris was designed to overcome barriers to repair on SODA: https://lnkd.in/gQvGhgPj #SODAZine #SustainableDesign #EWasteReduction
