How can we integrate sustainable design to reduce the e-waste of small household goods? 🤔 Earlier this summer, TDC PR presented its Sustainability & Innovation Design Award to De Montfort University graduate Gabriel Kay at New Designers, where exceptional young talent was not in short supply. His project - the Osiris Kettle - was designed to tackle e-waste as small household goods like kettles, toasters and microwaves make up a staggering 32% (around 20 billion kilograms) of annual e-waste disposal. ♻️ We at SODA sat down with Gabriel to delve into the design process behind Osiris and discuss why important design principles like modularity and repair aren’t yet common practice. 🛠 🔗 Learn more about Gabriel’s inspiration for the project and how Osiris was designed to overcome barriers to repair on SODA: https://lnkd.in/gQvGhgPj #SODAZine #SustainableDesign #EWasteReduction

🚀 Earlier this month, we had the privilege of partnering with Design Burger for their Design Dialogues Exhibition 2024 - an event that truly pushed the boundaries of creative collaboration! 🎨✨ This event celebrated the launch of season two of their captivating interview series, where hand-sketched answers to thought-provoking questions were showcased alongside the incredible physical work of world-renowned designers. The exhibition allowed the design community to immerse themselves in the creative minds behind these innovative projects. Attendees were encouraged to share their own responses to the same questions posed to the designers. These answers, posted on the exhibition walls, acted as a powerful reminder of the impact of bringing together diverse perspectives. We’re proud to have been a part of this inspiring event that highlighted the power of dialogue and the importance of connection in the world of design.💡 A big thank you to all the incredible designers that took part: Karim Rashid, Simone Brewster, norman teague, Arielle Assouline-Lichten, Mike & Maaike, Luca Nichetto, Benjamin Hubert, David Caon, Panter&Tourron, ionna vautrin, Nothing. 📸: Adam Weir. Feeling inspired? Drop a comment and let us know your thoughts on the intersection of dialogue and design! 💬👇 #TDCPR #Design #DesignDialogues #CreativeCommunity

🎨 Unlocking the Future of Creativity in the UK: Are We Ready? The creative industries are the heartbeat of the UK economy, pumping £109 billion into it in 2021 alone. But it’s not just about the numbers—93% of Brits believe that having the space and freedom to be creative is essential for their wellbeing. 🌟 With a new government in place, there's hope that the role of creativity in our society will finally get the attention it deserves. Education is at the core of this transformation. Labour’s commitment to supporting creative and vocational subjects until age 16 is a step in the right direction, and the launch of Skills England is set to address the critical skills shortage in the UK. 📚 The upcoming Industrial Strategy promises even more focus on the creative sectors. For example, the film industry has seen a troubling decline in course enrollments, and data from Channel 4 shows that only 1 in 12 people in film and TV come from working-class backgrounds—a trend all too common across other creative fields. 🎥 Design and technology face similar challenges. The Design & Technology Association’s ‘Reimagining D&T’ report, along with Abbey Bamford’s powerful piece in The Guardian, raises alarms about the potential disappearance of this subject from the national curriculum in just four years. 📉 The value of creativity—social, economic, and environmental—is crystal clear. With Labour’s plans to invest more in our industries, we’re on the brink of making a significant impact on a larger scale. 🌍 Learn more about how design and its role looks set to evolve in our latest SODA article: https://lnkd.in/e5Z2yrEq #TDCPR #CreativeIndustries #DesignAndTechnology #CreativeEconomy

In light of the recent violent events across the UK, it’s important to reflect on the role of social media in spreading misinformation and inciting violence. At TDC PR, we care deeply about issues surrounding discrimination and racism, standing firmly against the far-right protests and the dangerous narratives that fuel such unrest. The tragic events in Southport, where misinformation on social platforms led to widespread violence, shine a spotlight on the urgent need for social platforms to take greater responsibility in monitoring and mitigating fake news and propaganda. Social media platforms like X have a profound role to play in implementing stricter policies and more robust monitoring systems. The events of this past week serve as a stark reminder that failure to remove harmful and unchecked content can have devastating real-world consequences. With more and more platforms integrating advanced AI technologies into their offering, AI tools can be leveraged alongside dedicated teams to enhance content moderation in real-time, quickly removing violent and misleading posts. Running educational campaigns can inform users about the dangers of misinformation and teach them how to spot it and report it, while stricter verification for accounts with significant influence can curb false information. As we engage in this challenging discussion about the consequences of inadequate social media responsibility, we remain committed to fostering a safer and more informed digital environment. Like many, we agree something more substantial needs to be done. For more context on these events, see the detailed coverage by CNN’s Rob Picheta here: https://lnkd.in/e-AeivJv #SocialMedia #SocialMediaResponsibility #DigitalAgency

"We can't pretend that aesthetics are not important when it comes to sustainability" 🌱 In a compelling piece for Dezeen's and SketchUp's Climate Salon partnership, Andrew Corney of Trimble Inc. takes us on a journey to explore the intersection of beauty and sustainability in architecture. While the glass and steel structures that define our skylines are celebrated for their sleek appearance and resilience, they come with a significant environmental challenges. Shifting towards bio-based and recycled materials presents a beautiful eco-friendly alternative, yet this transformation demands an industry-wide embrace of new technologies and validation systems. As we begin to rewrite the definition of architectural beauty, key strategies emerge to embrace local sourcing and adaptive reuse. These approaches not only shrink carbon footprints, but also spark a wave of innovation and creativity. Let’s challenge traditional perspectives and champion sustainable aesthetics for a greener future and a more beautiful world. 🌱 Sustainability and sports have often clashed, but this year has seen a significant push towards greener practices at global events. Here are TDC PR’s top sustainable initiatives in sports for 2024: 🏉 The phrase ’The Summer of Sport’ has being making rounds in media this year, but one of our favourite initiatives actually took place during the Six Nations Rugby tournament in March. Notpla Chip Forks, made from a seaweed-based polymer called Notpla Rigid, were used throughout the event and have since been shortlisted for a PENTAWARDS prize. Feedback revealed that almost 80% of attendees rated their experience as very good or good, and 70% acknowledged the importance of sustainable cutlery at venues like Twickenham Stadium. ⚽ Being one of the most anticipated sporting events this summer, the Euros 2024 football tournament embraced sustainability with adapted match schedules, smart mobility incentives, and carbon footprint measurements. All stadiums and facilities were upgraded to maximise energy and water efficiency, while waste was managed through the 4R principle: reusing, reducing, recycling, and recovering. 🎾 For the first time ever, Wimbledon introduced a unique refill system by Evian, allowing spectators to stay hydrated with natural mineral water. This expanded on the success of the player refill system from last year. While the initiative aims to reduce plastic waste, the £5 QR code fee and £25 stainless steel bottle cost raised questions about consumer willingness to pay for sustainability. 🇫🇷 At the Paris 2024 Olympics, sustainability was front and center with seats made from plastic bottles and only one permanent competition venue built. This venue in Seine-Saint-Denis was designed to meet long-term community needs, particularly addressing the local issue where 50% of 11-year-olds do not know how to swim. These initiatives highlight the powerful impact of sustainability in sports, setting a new standard for future events. Stay tuned for more insights from TDC PR! 📸 Image Credits: Notpla #TDCPR #Sustainability #SummerOfSport
